None of the bagels are vegan

When I walked up to the counter to order and asked if the plain bagel was vegan, the person at the counter said it was dairy-free but not vegan. I asked what was in it that made it non-vegan. She checked with a coworker, and they said they didn't have any vegan bagels.

I suspect that the bagels have eggs in them, or something like l-cysteine, which is made from bird feathers.

I wonder if the counterperson got "vegan" mixed up with "gluten-free"--I have seen this happen before (and unless they have honey, fresh bagels are usually vegan). Granted, however, the management should have trained the staff better in this regard or labeled the bagels as vegan more explicitly.

You may be right. I asked at three other bagel places yesterday and today. The answer to "Do you have any vegan bagels?" is invariably "No". Sometimes it's, "No, we have regular bagels". At first, I thought this was some sort of anti-vegan hostility, but I'm starting to think it's an artifact of separating sales from production, as well as a misunderstanding of the meaning of "vegan". In other words, you have regular bagels, which are made with flour, salt, sugar, and yeast; and vegan bagels, which are made with vegan flour, vegan salt, etc., and then blessed by a vegan priest who sprinkles vegan dust over them. But having had the experience of ordering vegan food and receiving non-vegan food, I feel a little uncomfortable ordering something that has been authoritatively declared "not vegan", especially since many bagel recipes contain eggs and honey.

Best Bagel (3.5 out of 5)

It was good, but it is not the best compared to some of my NYC faves. This place is super busy but quick and efficient. It has great vegan cream cheese options. Tofu scallion is my recommendation. This shop will do for most people.

I rate it 3.5 out of 5. I would have given them 4, but I personally don't think they put enough vegan cream cheese on the bagel... The amount looks a bit pathetic in my photo compared to other places. 🥯👀

Also note the bagel maps rate it as such (as of the date of this review):
4.17 / 5
#14 in Manhattan
#35 in NYC

Visiting NYC? Have a bagel!

Bagels are a real NYC treat--a must for any tourist! There are loads of great bagel shops in NYC--including this one. For a party a while ago, I got two dozen bagels from this place, and they were a big hit—and if you are in the area and want a bagel, this place is as good as any (and to repeat--most all NYC bagel places are good).

Today I got a bagel with a tofu smear from this place, and it was really good. Other than a bagel with nothing on it, there is not much else that is vegan here, however, other than a couple of types of tofu spreads--and bagels + tofu cream cheese are not that healthy. Although the bagels here are delish, the same can be said of just about all the bagel shops in NYC that offer fresh bagels, and just about all NYC bagel shops offer tofu cream cheese. I have heard people argue that the bagels at one place or the other are the best, but as far as I can tell, so long as the bagel is warm, it will be tasty.

Good bagels, quick service

My go to spot for a quick bagel when I visit the city. Veggie tofu cream cheese is very tasty, and the bagels are nice and fresh.
