A unique experience

We stopped here for a night between Kyoto and Tokyo. The staff were tremendously accommodating and kind in moving our reservation due to a typhoon that stopped all the bullet trains for a few days.

I don’t know how old the inn is, but in the states I would say it has a very 1970s ashram feeling to it. Our room on the 4th floor was very spacious and it was worth splurging for the deep private tub and shower in a little greenhouse room. A bird even sang in the rooftop garden outside.

Dinner and breakfast are served promptly as a set menu. They are very vegetable focused and seasonal. You can also get as much rice and miso soup as you like. The kitchen staff explained everything we were being served and told us how it came from local farms.

The onsen is indoors and has a waterfall. Onsens seem to be the main reason people come to Yugawara, so give it a try.

On our way out, the staff (knowing we were going to Tokyo) had prepared a folder of recommended vegan restaurants for us. How sweet!

If you are looking for the ryokan experience just outside of Tokyo and don’t want to be bothered asking questions about meals or searching for options in local restaurants, definitely give it a try. It’s so different than a western hotel and you won’t forget it.

Pros: Warm, wonderful staff, Great meals made with love, Private bath was awesome (not all rooms have it)

Cons: Town is pretty sleepy

Zen and chill Japanese inn with onsen, one-of-a-kind experience

Take off your shoes and relax as you walk into this very quaint, zen oasis. This was such a cool place and I am really looking forward to a return visit. The soft meditative music played in the check-in area is so soothing to walk by and listen to when entering the dining area for meals or checking out the gift shop corner. Staff was super sweet and friendly throughout the stay. The chef and kitchen staff were also there to greet guests upon entering and kindly showed us to our assigned table for meals. The meals were very veggie-centric and super healthy. The self-serve activated brown rice and miso soup offered during breakfast and dinner were super yummy and completed the meal. Just a interesting tip my Saitama-native friend taught me while eating meals with her here was that the soup goes on the right-hand side and the rice goes on the left-hand side of the meal set-up (but I have heard this can differ in some other prefectures or regions, but since she was set on me following the standard, I definitely followed suit).

Inside of Goen No More, the walls are lined with tons of books (like its very own health and wellness Japanese library) and the room names are very unique for each one. The other highlight in the room is the tatami mat floor and traditional style futon to sleep on (due to this being a ryokan/ traditional japanese-style inn). Also, I truly enjoyed wearing the provided cotton kimono-style robe around Geon no mori during my entire visit - it was very comfy and lightweight, while still be warm enough.

The hot spring bath downstairs was so soothing and relaxing, and the unlimited use was great. Once I scrubbed my body well and tied up my hair, I was good to go for each relaxing bath each morning and night. Next to the onsen on the bottom floor is a little meditation area. I did not get to meditate there, but hopefully I can during my next visit. This place is such a gem and I hope they continue to prosper.

Terrific place to relax

I loved the rock-lined wall onsen. They are tucked downstairs and there's a side for men and one for women. You can use them if you have a small tattoo per the staff, but not a large one.

Free teas and water were available in the hall. The room had a fridge but eating in the room was prohibited. It also didn't have a hot water kettle-just mugs to use to hold the teas and water from the hall.

The vegan welcome snack was okay-it was like a brownie. The lunch bento were good. The breakfast and dinner were outstanding. You receive a variety of small dishes and there is also a buffet with other dishes and you can take as much as you want of those. My favorite items were the miso soup, warabi shoots with soy sauce and roasted almonds and a deep-fried banana with anko and soy whipped cream for a dessert.

They do provide coffee with the meals but the cups are very small-almost the size of espresso cups.

They also have alcohol available at dinner for an extra charge.

They wouldn't vary the room cleaning time so I ended up canceling it the first morning in order to sleep in more.

They have a small gift shop corner where you can buy some of the ingredients used in the meals and other souvenirs and I got some of the soy sauce and some raspberry vinegar to take home.

Overall I think it's a great place to not have to worry about if the food is vegan and enjoy delicious food and the onsen. I hope to go again.

There really isn't anything explicitly sold as vegan anywhere else in the surrounding area so I do recommend booking all three meals-breakfast, dinner, and the bento lunch. There are convenience stores nearby.
