Izakaya with vegan options - Edit
The menu has a lot of vegan small plates to choose from, but only a couple options in the mains. We had vegan fried dumplings and vegan ramen, the dumplings were tasty, the ramen just okay (lacking flavor). I would stop in again to try the different sakes with some snacks from the small plates menu.

Atmospheric Izakaya with Extensive Sake Menu - Edit
Iro Izakaya is one of a few Izakayas in Berlin - a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks, kind of like a British pub or Spanish tapas bar. On the Monday evening that my girlfriend at the time and I went the medium-sized restaurant was quite empty, meaning we could get a nice seat at the window.
Read moreI really liked the vibe. There were sumo-wrestler paintings on the walls, colorful glass in the ceiling and the lighting was warm and yellow. The speakers were playing Japanese pop including some famous karaoke songs (or so I was told).
Vegan and vegetarian options were clearly marked on the menu and there were twelve vegan starters (numbers 1-12) two vegan mains and two vegan ramens. As starters/tapas we ordered the Iro Tofu no Misoshiru (miso soup), Okara Korokke (Japanese fried croquettes with a soy filling) and as my main dish I had the IRO Vegan Ramen. Everything was delicious, but what stole the show for me was the miso soup. Yum!
Everything arrived super fast, perhaps because it was so empty. Something that was a bit strange to me was that the ramen arrived a few minutes before the starters. Maybe that's the Izakaya style. For dessert I had the Vegan Panna Cotta but I could've skipped it -it just tasted ok.
Apart from the dessert the food was great; however, what made this place stand out to me was the drink and sake menu. There were twelve sakes and two shochu. What I really enjoyed was that each sake had a dry/sweet rating, and that there was a map of Japan showing where each one was from. We ordered three sakes; one from the north, one from the center, and one from the south. They were all great - especially the Yuzu Shu.
I had a really good time at Iro Izakaya and would be happy to go back here.
Pst! In just four days they're having a soft-opening for the new Iro Izakaya Vegan, just a stone's throw away from Boxenhager Platz. Don't miss it!😉
Pros: Sake menu, Vibe
Cons: Not that many vegan main dishes

Izakaya Feeling in BE - Edit

nice place to be - Edit
the vegan options are clearly labelled and i'd say about half of the small dishes are vegan -- if you're hungry, just take most of them and enjoy your meal😉(though the tables are a bit small for that)
Read moreit was cool inside so i guess they've upgraded to air conditioners(?)
they have a big sake card, a few cocktails and other alcoholic beverages. the selection of non-alcoholic drinks consists mainly of local-based lemonades, tea and two or three other self-made drinks
Pros: izakaya
Cons: small tables

cute izakaya with many vegan option - Edit
Not a sushi bar, but an izakaya!
Read moreClearly labeled vegan dishes. We went there two days in a row, never ordering any (vegan) dish twice and still got more than full an both days. The teriyaki tofu, miso-glazed aubergine and mustard-spinach with sesame is really tasty. The rice is top.
I'd suggest two dishes plus rice per person (or one donburi or ramen) if not too hungry.
Drink selection was not too great, if looking for non-alcoholic.
Staff is Japanese, speaks German and/or English. Very friendly.
Before closing of kitchen, staff asked every customer if they still wanted to order anything.
Prices are reasonable.
I really like the interior, which is colorful, kind of mondrian-inspired, but cosy and traditional (lots of wood) at the same time.
Will definitely go there again when in Berlin next time.
Pros: most of the menu is vegan, clearly labeled allergenes on the menu, colorful but traditional interior
Cons: no air-con, no free tea or rice, kitchen closes at 10 pm
