The First Fully Vegan Izakaya in Berlin - Edit
I love the Izakaya concept and had a great time at Iro Izakaya a few months ago, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw a few weeks ago that they were opening a vegan branch!
Read moreFollowing the newly opened Iro Izakaya 2 in Prenzlauer Berg, Iro Izakaya Vegan is the latest addition to the explosive expansion of Iro Izakaya, the Japanese restaurant at the corner of Boxenhager Platz that I've praised for their inventive and entertaining sake menu.
I just came home from the soft opening of Iro Izakaya Vegan and let me tell you - it was an amazing event. The food was free and the drinks only cost 2€ each. Everything was vegan and tasted great. I had sushi, ramen and different kinds of Japanese tapas. There was a DJ playing loud, groovy house music - one of my absolute favorite genres -, and we were lucky enough to get a table right next to her. The place was medium-sized and pretty soon after we arrived it got completely full, which made the whole atmosphere even better.
The decoration was quite simple and Japanese-inspired. The service was excellent. Everyone I talked to - two waiters, two bartenders, two chefs and the DJ - all looked Japanese, almost no one spoke German, and some barely even English. One of the waitresses wore a traditional kimono and wooden sandal shoes that made a "knack knack knack" noise as she walked around. I liked it - I found it authentic.
I'm extremely excited that we now have a fully vegan Izakaya in Berlin. I expect this to be a great addition to the Berlin vegan scene and am already looking forward to going back here on a normal evening. Arigatou!
Update: I went here for my 30th birthday dinner and it was fantastic. Yasai Gyoza was the highlight!

Everything vegan, I had a yummy cocktail (yuzu frizz) and I had great Wantan Ramen. Also: if you post a good review about them on google maps or instagram, you get a suprise😄

Tasty food - Edit
I really liked the yasai gyoza and their alcohol free drink (something with matcha and yuzu). The ramen was good, but the broth was a bit blend. I asked for chili and soysauce, which was no problem.

Cons: With card only from 30€ upwards

Great Japanese - Edit
Sushi and apps were amazing, ramen was very good but broth was a bit basic. Still delicious though. If you are from outside of Germany bring cash.

THad to stop and get something when I walked by. Had a pannacotta dessert and the taste was really good, in my opinion ut was a little to much like jelly in the texture but still very good!

Bad luck? - Edit
I came on a Thursday evening and they did not have some dishes available but had the gyozas which were nice but the tantan ramen broth was a bit bland before mixing in the chilli and the noodles were very overcooked so did not finish my meal and my drink never came. The toppings were nice on the ramen, maybe I made the wrong choices on a bad night going by other reviews.

We got the Green Love Sushi for 2. Food was amazing, the drinks were really good as well. Generous amount of food. The service wasn’t the best this time but the first time I visited it was amazing.

Top Ramen - Edit
Perfectly savory flavory. On top great location, nice interior and quick service. Seems to be a Vietnamese run restaurant with Japanese cooks.

The food is outstanding! - Edit
We went on a Saturday evening so it was very crowded and loud but we got a table fairly quickly. We ordered three starters (tofu/chicken stew, mushroom skewers, fried avocado) and they were all incredible! So flavourful and great combinations. The homemade drinks were fun too. Sushi was great, very unique choices and some of the best sushi I’ve tried. Overall we greatly enjoyed the food and the waiter was very friendly too😄Hope to come back!

Nice restaurant - Edit
We had the ramen and curry and overall liked the food and the ambience. Both the ramen and the curry could have had a bit more veggies for their price points, but the food was fresh and tasty. I would come back and try their vegan sushi options

I ordered Appetizers number 7-10 instead of a main. So so good. It’s just so good to walk into a Vegan restaurant and have so many cruelty free choices to eat.

A nice and clean place, but could be cozier. Good selection with an all vegan menu and a nice selection of ramen, appetizers and sushi. I’ve had better ramen in Berlin though.

Good Asian food - Edit
Very chill place, the starters were quite good. Unfortunately I went after being at Secret garden and failed to be impressed by the sushi. Overall good food, but not a lot of variety. On the good side- you need to order several things if you don’t want ramen so you get to share and try different dishes. Everything with mushrooms was great.

Good but not great - Edit
I was very happy to find this fully vegan Japanese place, bc that's one of my top favorite cuisines. We ordered the 2 ramens and 1 appetizer that you can see on the pics, plus a Kimono special roll that we ate it all before even considering taking a picture. 😅 I loved the atmosphere, the service, and all the dishes were good, but to be honest, nothing tasted as great as I expected... I felt like everything was lacking taste, since I've had better ramens, gyozas and sushi in other places.
