Just okay

I was kind of let down. I was expecting more. The sauce was good. I asked for the deep-dish pizza to be cooked well done. I had read reviews of it being undercooked. The toppings didn’t have much flavor. It took a long time to get my food and the wait staff wasn’t very attentive.

Mediocre pizza, too expensive

I loved the atmosphere but the pizza was really not worth the price. And the pepperoni they use is soggy. Drinks are good tho, and so were the fries

Pros: Atmosphere , Drinks

Cons: Pizza, Price

Deep Dish Fully Loaded

Cool vegan spot with retro vibes. The pizza 🍕 was cool. I love the fact that everything is 100% vegan. We played connect four while we waited for our pizza. Great menu with lots of choices.

Bar food

Over-rated definitely. We’ve had a lot of really good vegan food over the years, mostly on the West coast and Europe, so it’s hard to impress us. The pizza was definitely NOT worth it. We got the traditional, following reviews of previous people and it still wasn’t that great. The only thing we liked about the place was the buffalo cauliflower wings and the Mac and cheese. The desserts were mushy and the cheesecake tasted like vegan gelatin. It was a loud atmosphere but we expected that and it didn’t bother us. I wouldn’t waste your time going here if you’re looking for good Chicago vegan pizza.

Good but pricey

I'd never had deep dish pizza before going vegan so I knew I had to try some while in Chicago. Kitchen 17 didn't disappoint! I got the cheeseburger deep dish and it was quite an experience. I loved the first slice and by the end of the second my body was like "never again!" This wasn't because anything was wrong with the pizza but I should've gone with a more traditional choice of toppings - I just don't love the combo of so much marinara and cheeseburger toppings when I'm not ravenously hungry. I think if the smallest deep dish size was like 6-8 inches rather than 12 I would've been totally fine with it. But for $30 odd dollars... Well, I wouldn't recommend the cheeseburger deep dish specifically.

My friend got a pan pizza with spinach artichoke dip and tomatoes and she LOVED it. We each had cocktails and they were really good. It's maybe not the world's best sangria as they call it, but it was definitely good sangria. I also got two different cheesecakes and some fudge to go for dessert. The cheesecakes were both enormous and spectacular. The fudge was grainy and not very good, but I've yet to have vegan fudge from anywhere other than Lagusta's in New York that wasn't grainy.

The music was fairly loud, but my friend and I could still hear each other just fine. Staff was friendly if a bit difficult to locate at times. We were there on a Wednesday night so it wasn't super busy.

Pros: Huge desserts, Filling pizzas, Great cocktails

Cons: Smallest deep dish isn't small enough

Aight.

I'm glad I tried this place. I love supporting vegan businesses. The food was decent and the atmosphere was fun, but it didn't feel clean. The desserts were the best part.

Bad experience

We were really looking forward to eating here given the positive reviews. Sadly the pizza was so salty (as others have commented) and the base was so hard it could not be cut. The pizza was hot but if we tried to eat it with our hands the toppings slid off. The restaurant staff were defensive when I complained the pizza was inedible. They said it was a matter of taste. There was no ownership of the issue. They did not offer to substitute the item or refund the pizza which was left uneaten. Instead they accused me of being rude. The reviews on here are mixed. Maybe we got a bad day?!? On a personal level, the grungy vibe was not our thing and I was concerned about the hygiene having visited the bathrooms.

Pros: Fries came quickly

Cons: Food was very salty , Defensive when food was not to our liking., Blamed customer for not liking over salty food.

Nice deep dish and desserts

Tasty deep dish pizzas and a couple of really decadent deserts.

We had the traditional pie which had a nice spiciness to it with the soy sausage, and the cheeseburger pie which had really nice pickles in with the burger meat and a fast food sauce. The crust was nice, but perhaps lacking a little flavour and I maybe expected slightly more given they're all made fresh in house.

The turtle cheesecake was really creamy and had a good amount of pecans throughout. The star of the show was a massive choc peanut butter brownie cheesecake mega pie though- which was as rich and delicious as that all sounds.

We washed it all down with a really fresh blackberry lemonade and strawberry watermelon cooler- both really nice and went great with the food.

Not what I expected

Pretty terrible vibes like inconsistent, obnoxiously loud playlist and dark interior. Felt like it wanted to be a vegan punk bar but it couldn't quite commit.

Food was super disappointing. The pizzas were undercooked, seitan was really gummy, and cheese sauce tasted like water. Plus, everything was super bland as if left unsalted. And who puts leafy greens and ranch on nachos??

Cool place good food but loud

I came here with my cousins on a recent trip to Chicago. The seating area was quite small but they managed to accommodate us. The music was quite loud so I could only hear the people sitting right next to me.

We ordered the deep dish pizza and it was massive! I had 2 pieces and was full completely. 😊

The waiter was actually quite rude but I was having so much fun with my cousins I didn't even mind.

Pros: Creepy circus theme, Pizza, All vegan yay

Cons: Too loud , Rude waiter, Expensive

vegan deep dish!!!

i've been meaning to go to kitchen 17 for a very long time; however, it was never convenient for me to go and i decided to just go out of my way one day to try it. 100% worth it! i will be back.

i ordered bbq cauliflower wings (because i heard they were AMAZING), mac n cheese, and a traditional deep dish pizza to test out the waters. the cauliflower wings were genuinely some of the best i've ever had. the breading stayed on the wing and the bbq sauce was delicious! i liked how they weren't super soggy despite being soaked in sauce, and the pieces of cauliflower were large and well-cooked. the mac n cheese was also pretty tasty; i want to try it in a pizza next time i go! speaking of pizza, the traditional deep dish pizza was amazing! i was introducing my friend to deep dish pizza, and this was a wonderful example. the crust was thick, crispy, and held up very well against the pizza fillings. the seitan pepperoni was my favorite! i saw they had a massive case of desserts, and while i already had plans, i'll definitely be sure to get some next time.

the service was good, but there was definitely no rush to get the check. i like the atmosphere of the vegan metal bar, and the walls were decorated with many interesting little things to keep my attention. there was always something new to look at! i went at a time where it wasn't packed, but i imagine it would probably be on the louder side.

Pros: vegan deep dish pizza 😇🙏, large / creative menu

Cons: kind of inattentive service

Very good pizza and more

Extensive menu with a lot to choose from. The pizza drew us in, but the Mac and cheese was the real star. Would definitely visit again to to try more stuff. Cool decor as well.

Also had a local Pittsburgh beer on hand. I didn’t have any, but it was amusing to spot Iron City out of the local Western PA area.

Pros: Lots of options , Fast service , Interesting decorations

Highly disappointed

I was excited to taste their deep dish pizza but truthfully it was awful. The service, the food, the lack of flavor but also the overt saltiness. We ordered the spinach dish & the traditional deep dish and it was distasteful to say the least. I was incredibly dissatisfied and disappointed. The servers were completely disengaged and didn’t stop by once to check in or to refill waters/ drinks. It hurts me to write this as someone who wants to support all vegan businesses but this was a huge flop.

Cons: So salty , No actual flavor, Inattentive service

Disappointed

I went to Kitchen 17 with high hopes, but was let down. It seems to be mostly a bar/venue with vegan food, weird dim lights and a funky atmosphere. Unfortunately I found the food fairly bland and unimpressive.

I ordered the traditional deep dish and it was hardly the Chicago pie I’ve heard about. Slightly thicker crust, and the sauce holds almost all the flavor, the little there was.

Their home made cheese barely tasted like anything, and if it weren’t for the vegan meat crumble I’d completely forget what it tasted like between bites.

Amazing

We tried the popcorn tofu, philly cheese steak, and gyro with cheese fries. I loved the popcorn tofu and cheese sauce for the fries especially. Their cheese sauce is home made and so good I literally dreamed about how good it tasted the night after I had it. The popcorn tofu reminded me of popcorn shrimp and the flavor was so incredible. Highly recommend, will definitely be back next time we visit Chicago.

Pros: Cool atmosphere , Amazing popcorn tofu

Cons: Didn't really like the band that was playing

Cool place with good food!

I visited here with a friend and we got a deep dish veggie pizza. I wanted to have a true Chicago style pizza! The cheese was incredible and the artichokes really were the star of the show.

The pizza is REALLY filling so we didn’t get to try much else besides coffee and peach tea. The menu is expansive and I would totally go back to try more.

This place is a restaurant/bar so if you go during a busy time you can expect a loud atmosphere. We went as soon as it opened and it was more quiet. They have lots of free games and the guy working there was incredibly sweet. Would go back again!

Wonderful all-vegan place!

Walking in for the first time is a treat for the eyes. There is a full old-school bar, which is not so out of place in the 'hood, but the place is full of plants and wonderfully strange items, such as a unicorn, board games, a mannequin with a gasmask, and pinball games (which are totally free to play). Way funky all around. There was death metal playing the whole time that a friend and I ate half of a 16" Plant Lovers deep-dish pizza, which was divine (!) and took us an hour to get through, and there was no way to eat another bite. So, we got a box to take the other half of the pizza home. The way friendly person behind the bar told us that they make their own vegan cheese daily, and they make all of the desserts, including the Chocolate Cheesecake, which I bought to take home. This place is now a favorite. Highly recommend! I'll definitely eat here again next time I'm in Chicago.

Pros: Great vegan cheese pizza, Way funky bizarre cool wonderful decor, Friendly staff

This isn't a restaurant, it's a bar

It's called a restaurant and lounge, and they have live music, but this is a bar. You'll enter to find a loud, somewhat small, and dimly lit space for serving drinks and a small assortment of tables for dining.

That said? The food is phenomenal. The deep dish pizza hits unbelievably well, the mac and cheese is authentic, the popcorn tofu gives off KFC vibes, the fries are ideal diner food, and the burgers are delicious.

the good and not great

ordered the traditional deep dish, chili cheese fries, a slice of the chocolate peanut butter brownie cheesecake, and a slice of the caramel apple crumb pie. first things first is that this is older style vegan food, from before we became obsessed with recreating animal products super realistically; the meat and cheeze products don't taste terribly like real meat and dairy cheese. besides that, the deep dish was delicious and had a fantastic crust that my friend and i raved about. the chili cheese fries were less fantastic. the fries and chili were delicious but the cheese was chunky, sticky, and didn't taste like anything and i ended up picking it off. i didn't receive the brownie cheesecake and got the cookie crust mud pie, which was delicious but so rich i couldn't eat more than a bite or two at a time (it ended up taking 3 sessions just to eat one slice!). my friend got the apple crumble pie and said it was delicious. overall it was very good, but be mindful with the substitutes if you're used to modern meat replacements and dairy free cheeze!

Great vibes but food was a let down

I genuinely really wanted to like this place’s food. The vibe is great, laid back. Started out with the pita bread and dip which was great. Waiter was very nice. Gave us recommendations. We ended up going with the sausage/pep deep dish.

What a mistake.

The mock meats tasted completely uncooked and just not good. I’ve had plenty of pizzas with mock meat on them. This was the worst one by far. Had the pan macaroni pizza. Presentation was nice but just left you wanting more. It was completely mediocre. Even the cheesy bread was meh.

Overall the food is mid but a nice place to get a few drinks with friends. Can’t see myself eating here again despite living 5-10 minutes away. It was that bad

Yummy Deep Dish

This vegan restaurant has a mix of different menu items, but we specifically went for the deep dish pizza. We don't have vegan deep dish in Columbus, so it was a must in Chicago. The deep dish crust was awesome, and I loved the Mac n cheese pizza (I think I was the only one) we also got a traditional deep dish with vegan sausage, a great marinara and vegan cheese. Prices were good, and the service was as well.

Pros: Variety of options
