Delicious pasta! - Edit
I really enjoyed the pasta of the day, which the lovely restaurant staff made vegan on request - replacing meat and cheese with delicious veggies.
Read moreThe vegetable caponata also made a tasty starter!
Just ask the staff for the vegan menu and they will provide one 😊
Pros: Pasta of the day can be made vegan on request, Friendly and helpful staff, Nice atmosphere
Cons: Slightly limited vegan main meal options

Lovely ryokan, vegan food - Edit
I told the server I am vegan and she produced a menu in English where the vegan options were clearly labeled. Several options - I had battered mushrooms, tofu with ginger miso, garlic bread (shared) and the rice / miso set which made for a filling meal. The breakfast menu doesn’t have a default vegan option but I explained to the staff and they will make me a sandwich for tomorrow. The inn itself is very nice and the staff are great.

Vegan food available - Edit
No seperate vegetarian/vegan menu. Vegetarian options are marked up on the menu
Read moreWaiter spoke very little English so took us a little while to deduce what vegan options we could order. We ended up with a large portion of fries (very delicious and homemade), fried mushrooms (very greasy, too heavy on the batter and lacked flavour), silken tofu and a portion rice.
This was only 1 of 2 places in this tiny town serving veg/vegan and this place came bottom. Head to the local place a few doors up for a more authentic Japanese meal of homemade soba noddles
Pros: Friendly staff and speedy service.
Cons: Limited options and food lacked flavour

Nice old fashioned Ryokan and a few vegan options for dinner - Edit
We stayed for 1 night in April 2019 and had the fries, beer-batter mushrooms and a salad for dinner (very tasty). There are no vegan options for breakfast, but we knew that beforehand. The Ryokan itself is very old fashioned, but we slept very well. There is no Onsen bath in the house, but free shuttle service to affiliated ryokans Onsen. The staff was very friendly, speaks English and they even drove us to the Snow monkey park.

Delicious - Edit
Not sure that they had a vegan separate menu, but clearly marked vego options on the normal menu and good to talk to about it. Had the tofu and the deep fried mushrooms. My partner had the vego arancini balls (not vegan) all delicious)

Had the Shigakogen beer frit of four kinds local mushroom and the local vegetable salad. The mushrooms were yummy and very crispy. The salad included vegetables such as tomato, pumpkin, snow peas and sweet potato which was a nice surprise.

Great to have options in this area - Edit
One of the few places we found with vegan food in this small town of Shibu-Onsen. The staff were super helpful, just ask them about their vegan menu and they'll give you a list of vegan options! It was great when it was ridiculously cold and snowing outside and we didn't want to go far to eat. Decent portions/price and the food was good, but it is more western style food.

Cons: Menu is not extensive
