Confusing ordering

TLDR: Ask about fish, oyster, shrimp, etc sauces and butter and mayo in anything that appears vegan, every time you go, no matter if you've checked before.

I have loved Nobi for a long time and as I made the transition to veganism, I made sure to ask whether items I ordered were vegan and through this have picked up on "safe" items I relied on to order. Generally, I get tofu spring rolls and (in hot weather) tofu vermicelli (sub fish sauce for soy) or (in cold weather) tofu bi's curry. Since I have gotten confirmation on these items being animal-free in the past, I no longer look at the menu and order from memory.

Recently, I was enjoying my curry when I overheard two Nobi staff members apologizing to a group who was leaving; I overheard "basically everything has fish sauce or shrimp paste" and paused mid-fork-full. I flagged down one of the staff members to confirm whether my meal was vegan and they said, "I think it has shrimp, are you allergic to shellfish too?" and then helpfully listed alterations I could make to tofu menu items to vegetarian/veganize. As we were wrapping up, one of the staff we talked with generously took the cost of the questionable curry off my bill and said he checked with the chef, who was unsure what was in the curry (maybe it is vegan?) but that the recipe changes frequently so he couldn't be sure. He also informed me all fried food is fried together in the same oil-- meat with tofu-- so cross-contamination is a given if you get tofu.

I really appreciated how Nobi's team handled this interaction but really would like if 1) Nobi had more vegan menu items without need for alterations or special requests and 2) those items were clearly marked and cooked consistently in their ingredients.

Pros: Helpful staff if you ask, Flavorful food, Good beers

Cons: Unclear menu/confused staff, Cross-contamination, Limited options that require alterations

Tasty spring rolls

The tofu spring rolls are delicious and affordable, highly recommend. Nice outdoor seating area. Bonus — they always have kombucha on tap.

Delicious Banh Mi

If you get the banh mi, be sure to ask for it with no butter. Both the veggie ham and the tofu banh mi can be made vegan this way!
I haven’t had any of their other food though.

This location also has better food than the Friendswood location, however the Friendswood location has more sides.

Pros: Fast service

Cons: Pricy, Usually packed
