Great food - Edit
Had the shôjin (monk) style menu, it was great. I asked the waitress about the broth, it was indeed katsuobushi (dried bonito).
Read moreOther than that, the food is great and cheap (around 1400-2300 yen for a set menu). A must-go!

Tasty food - Edit
The food was almost as delicious as at Fudoin.
Read moreI explicitly asked (in Japanese) to make sure there was no eggs or dairy in my food. The waitress then put in the order. I walked up to her and asked for konbudashi and not katsuo-dashi, due to the review here mentioning that. She sort of nodded, but I don't think anything was changed as a result.
Nothing seemed like it had fish broth in it to me, but I'm not sure I'd be able to tell.
It was a bit expensive, but seemed moderate for Koyasan.

Really nice, but not vegetarian! - Edit
This restaurant says it is vegetarian really clearly outside, and on the menu. However, they use katsuodashi (fish stock) in all their dishes. They can use konbudashi instead, and were really knowledgeable and accommodating when I asked about whether they used katsuodashi. They said no problem and suggested they could make any dish with konbudashi (seaweed stock) instead. The set I had was delicious, and served just as quickly as my friend's non-vegan food.
Read moreI do recommend it here, but just ask for the konbudashi option to make it veggie.
Pros: Great menu, Fast service , Helpful staff
Cons: Misleading labelling, Fish in food as standard

Nice place for lunch - Edit
We didn't stay in a temple in Koyasan but were keen to try out shojin ryori. The owner of our guest house recommended this place and we weren't disappointed. I chose the lunch box set (which was the most expensive meal at around 2500 Yen) and my friend had a ramen dish with tofu on top. Both dishes were tasty. Mine had, among other things, several variations of tofu preparation, which was nice to try. I can't compare it to shojin ryori at other temple lodgings but I think this was fun and affordable. Pretty sure the meal was vegan but as I'm a vegetarian I didn't check this.

go for the mountain vegetable rice pot - Edit
English menu but staff did not speak English. The mountain veggie rice pot was delicious, reminded me a bit of Hangawi in NYC. The whipped tofu over rice we did not eat, it may not have been vegan and was just not appealing.

Quick lunch place - Edit
Location: across the street from Fugenin-in temple on Senjuin dori;one half block from Main Street of Koyasan . There are menus displayed in front of the entrance, that say "vegetarian "in English.
Read moreFood: lunch only. Set meals with tofu, veggies, sesame tofu, barley rice mixture, rice bowls with veggies, or udon noodles. Moderate prices and quick service.if the Cafe Bon On Shya is closed or full, and you don't want to pay a lot for shojin ryori, this cafe is worth trying for lunch or a , coffee or tea break.
