Lovely dinner - Edit
Couldn’t leave New York without trying Souen! Their cornbread was maybe the best I’d ever had. The cashew alfredo had the perfect amount of vegetables, really delicious and a generous portion without being too heavy. The chocolate mousse was great too. I highly recommend for any vegan fortunate to find themselves in the East Village!

Healthy vegan options - Edit
I ordered the vegetable curry and also got to try a bit of the pesto veggies and cashew cream pasta my friend ordered. The food was not bad, but personally not my favorite. I expect more flavor when dining out. But for people who want something that's more on the healthy and simple side than the typical restaurant, I see the appeal.

Delicious vegan options - Edit
Delicious macrobiotic vegan options, shame the restaurant isn’t fully vegan or it would easily be a five star.

A MUST VISIT - Edit
Souen has been a must visit of mine for ten years whenever in NY. There are very few remaining macrobiotic restaurants anywhere these days, and this one hits all the right marks. Shoyu ramen is the best ramen I’ve ever had; squash tofu is simultaneously the healthiest and most satisfying meal ever. You absolutely must get the YUBA as a starter - so hard to find this on menus. Everything is divine. HappyCow needs to allow 5 stars for this.

Tiny Gem in E. Village - Edit
We’ve been enjoying this wonderful, macrobiotic cozy eatery for many years. Vegan but for fish options. Would be 5 stars, if Happy Cow allowed that for places that are not fully vegan. The staff are friendly and very attentive to any special dietary requests. There is a bean and soup of the day. The macro plate and miso soup are the best in town and very reasonably priced. Great dressings and sauces (vegan). A lot of variety, including stir fries and ramen noodle dishes [brown rice or zucchini noodles (both gluten-free) or udon or soba (both not gluten free). Terrific veggies and yummy sweet potato fries with spicy chipotle tahini sauce. Scrumptious vegan gluten free desserts! You must try blueberry or kobucha squash pies. It’s not fancy, but you will enjoy yourselves immensely and you deserve to have a healthy, tasty and satisfying meal at this down to earth consistently lovely place that is all too rare in this crazy world where nothing is guaranteed. Come back again or try it for the first time. You’ll be very happy you did.

Not as impressed as previously - Edit
I have been going to Souen for years in the previous two locations, and have always enjoyed it as a healthy, tasty restaurant. I was eager to try them in their new location, and maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but I was less impressed than previously. We had a squash soup, lentil croquettes, broccoli curry, and peanut tofu--nothing was that flavorful.

A restaurant that deserves a 5-star rating - Edit
Souen is my absolute favorite restaurant for vegan fare in New York City. They have a loyal following for good reason. Fresh, steamed vegetables with beans and brown rice, miso soup, delicious vegan desserts & so much more. You come here, and as the guy next to me exclaimed when he walked in, "I'll have the whole menu!". There are so many amazing VEGAN options, that it's hard to know which one to order. I'm a local and come here regularly. Their staff is wonderful. If you're ever in NYC, do yourself a favor and drop by for a flavorful meal.

The food was good and the cold kukicha tea was delicious and refreshing. Try the cornbread. Dense and very reminiscent of the classic cornbread from the sorely missed Angelika Kitchen.

I always walk out of here feeling like a million bucks - Edit
The food is so healthy that my gut thanks me every time.
Read moreI used to go for their tofu box but they’re discontinued it. That was my favorite. I like virtually all of their meals. Their Tai noodles are fantastic! (The peanut sauce is on point). The sweet potato fries and edamame beans are always a staple appetizer.
I had their stew and it made me feel like a million bucks. Their teas are great way to wash it down (I took their ginger tea bag)
Regarding dessert, I love their sweet potato pie, and I know their tofu cheesecake has some potential (the recipe could be improved over the long term).
Pros: Healthy food, Healthy treats, Great environment/ambiance
Cons: Not all items on menu always available, One of the treats could be bland

We had edamame and noodle soup bowls (ramen). The broth options are all vegan, the bowl was very well garnished. As a side dish we had roasted kale, it was delicious. Very good meal. Around 60$ for two, but we brought some leftovers home.
