The tofu is next level - Edit
Spending the night in an active temple and eating traditional shojin ryori food is an experience not to be missed. The tofu was something else, it's so delicate and soaks up all the flavour of the broth in the hotpot. You get to sample lots of different foods like pickled vegetables and things you might not find so easily or readily vegan in Japan. Tea is served on the table and they also have a separate drinks menu for alcohol, juice etc.

It’a already amazing to be able to stay in a proper and active temple, it’s an experience per se. But adding the flavours of the kitchen it’s an extraordinary one.

Amazing Shojin Ryori - Edit
I don't believe you can have dinner at the temple unless you are a guest, but they do have their temple goma dofu (sesame paste and kozu flour) for sale in the check in counter.
Read moreAll meals served at Buddhist temples are called "Shojin Ryori," mixing colors, textures, and flavors. There are many courses, starting with the tea ceremony, followed by soup, sesame tofu, and basket of fried bites. The sesame tofu has a similar texture to silken tofu, and the sesame taste is strong. The basket had vermicelli noodles fried to look like pine leaves, mountain potatoes (my fave), and breads. Then came a dumpling, tempura, pickles, thick soup, fried rice and miso, and a grape jelly dessert. My one gripe was that I wished dinner could have lasted longer, instead I felt a little rushed as dishes kept on coming out.
Breakfast - unlike dinner, all dishes are placed on the table when you sit down. It included tea, rice, tofu, soup, and a variety of pickles.
Both meals were exceptional and we took some doma gofu for back home :)
