Lovely Ryokan

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The food was great and plentiful and the building really charming. Everyone was super nice. I hope to come back again in the future. Only downside I can see is that the men's public bath seems to be a little bit nicer than the women's ;)

One of my favorite ryokans

I may be a little biased because I am friends with the owners but I absolutely love staying here at Saikawa. I’ve not had an issue with the food - they’ve been very communicative and so thoughtful about everything! Helps that I know Japanese but a non speaker shouldn’t have an issue as Ranko (ask for her) speaks enough English after living in the USA and is very familiar with veganism.

The food is amazing and be sure to ask for some local apple juice with your meal! Everything is always unforgettable.

Non guests are welcome to dine with them but it’s expensive - cheaper to stay and include breakfast and dinner as part of your stay.

Also try to give them a heads up before booking!

Pros: Delicious food, Huge portions , Rooms are very comfortable

Vegan-friendly Ryokan with a great traditional feel

My husband and I stayed at this inn for one night. We told them we are vegan when we reserved the room. We had a really nice stay and enjoyed the food and the bath.

The first thing we noticed when we got in the room was that the cookies on the table had butter in them. We notified the owner about it and suggested that they find something vegan-friendly for the next time they have vegan guests. They were very responsive and thanked us for bringing it to their attention.

The dinner was a lot of food for me, but everything was vegan! I saved my leftovers to have for lunch the next day. Breakfast was a better amount for me (although I was still pretty full afterwards) but there were a few items that concerned me. One was the natto, which came with a sauce packet that I suspected might have fish extract. Another was the pickled plum (umeboshi) which I suspected might have honey. Also, there were nori strips which sometimes have fish extract. I voiced my concerns about these items to the owner, and she said they will make sure and be more careful from now on.

The trouble with eating out sometimes is that the chefs who make the food are not always vegan, so sometimes they make mistakes. However, despite the few concerns that I had, I just want to say that I really appreciate them trying and I want to support them moving forward.

I still recommend that you stay at this inn. And when you do, please give them feedback if you have any concerns like I did. They will listen and hopefully it will get better and better the more people stay there.

Pros: It's a Vegan-friendly inn - that's rare!, Great location, beautiful nature all around, Good hospitality
