Gully Gosh, Don’t Teas Me - Edit
Luck was not entirely on my side when ordering from here. The first time I did, I received a call some thirty minutes after placing my order, informing me that half of what I had requested was out of stock. Deciding to give them the benefit of the doubt and reassuring myself that lightning couldn’t possibly strike twice, I gamely gave it another shot and waited patiently. Then I waited some more.
Read moreOver an hour had passed before I began making enquiries, which, I feel, was remarkably lenient on my part. No sooner had the call been made than, lo and behold, the food miraculously began its journey towards me. Having already experienced such consternation, this was now going to have to be something truly special to overcome that initial, less-than-favourable impression.
Somewhat begrudgingly, I have to admit - it did. And then some.
My stony resolve to critique them harshly was almost instantly softened by the adorably charming packaging (damn my foolish sensibility), though the tagline of ‘Good Times’ did prompt me to sarcastically mutter, “More like Waiting Times.”
That showed them.
This pretence of unflinching sternness dissolved entirely as soon as I began my assault on the long-awaited foodstuffs before me. One sip of the masala chai had me slipping into an entirely more zen and amiable state of mind. Paired exquisitely with the sweet, soft, jam-filled Bombay pao, this warming little treat ensured that any shortcomings in preparation speed had, by this point, been completely forgiven.
From there on out, the meal became progressively more impressive. Whether it was the vegetable puff, one of the many sandwiches, or even the peri-peri fries, everything possessed a genuine sense of quality, and it became increasingly difficult to find much in the way of faults.
The only minor criticism worth mentioning was that some of the wraps, particularly the schezwan vegetable, were exceedingly moist. However, aside from a few structural concerns, the flavours were superb, and each item was thoroughly enjoyable.
Choosing a favourite proved surprisingly difficult. The aforementioned beverage was certainly a strong contender, but ultimately the praise had to go to both the Tea Gully Special and the chkn shawarma.
Now that I have a better appreciation of what to expect when it comes to securing food from here, I’ll certainly be mindful of the wait when I do so again - and I absolutely will.
