Best Hopeful Non-Vegan Restaurant in GR

The Sovengard is the best vegan restaurant in GR that has one foot still tentatively hanging outside the door. In other words, if you took all the vegan options on their menu at the Sovengard and made it its own restaurant, you would have the options and the flavor to create the best vegan restaurant in Grand Rapids.

The menu at The Sovengard relies on local produce -- selectively choosing to focus on fresh ingredients that are in season around Grand Rapids and building the menu around this idea. They label this the "principles of the New Nordic movement." It becomes as much of a meal as it is an experience. It is amazing to see how the drab, standard American approach to food can be uprooted into something more.

But all of this fancy talk does not hold much water without quality food. And I can definitively say that there was no facet to nick-pick regarding our meal. The Lion's Mane BBQ was the best mushrooms I have ever had in Michigan. It replicates a "fatty" texture with a slightly charred aftertaste. The Mother Earth smorgasbord features a variety of breads and faux cheese spreads that tickle the tastebuds on texture and buttery flavor profiles that can be difficult to achieve vegan. And lastly was the elegant and exquisite vegan carrot cake that felt foreign to me to have such a pretty vegan patisserie.

If you are familiar with the restaurant's history, you will know that they have recently moved location further down their road. The new building lacks the walkability of the their old rental surrounded by bustling breweries, but once I made it to the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the interior. I mean, a green granite fireplace? Who does that? It feels like a night-out on the town that lends itself to a romantic date, rather than large family outings, so I felt right at home.

I know that the owner of the Sovengard wishes they could becomes a vegan restaurant, but the practicality of that is difficult to sustain in West Michigan. With that being said, promoting and visiting this establishment and choosing all the tasty vegan options helps build the case to restaurant owners that there is a market for this experience. If you have the slightest passing fancy in amazing vegan food, you have to check out The Sovengard in Grand Rapids, MI.
