Diverse Selection of Pastries

Shimo-kitazawa is the perfect spot to have a 100% vegan bakery in order to stock up on all your favorite pastries and treats.

The moment you walked inside, you could just smell the bready goodness from all of the fresh options they had lying in front of you. Everything is marked in Japanese and the staff are happy to explain what each item contains to help you narrow down your options.

I went with a choco bread where they smeared a hazelnut chocolate spread right in the center of the buns, a delectable matcha donut with red beans inside, and an apple muffin which was perfect on my flight back to the States.

While it was all delicious, everything did seem a bit pricier at ¥500 on average for a baked good. That seems to be the price you pay if you're paying for vegan items in Japan it seems.

There was a small dining area but it was filled up by the time I arrived mid-morning.

Pros: Variety of pastries

Cons: Pricing is a bit high

Tasteful

I just tried the chocolate framboise bread, but it was delicious, the coffee(drink) isn’t too tasty, but the breads yes, and so many nice options.

My Favorite Bakery in Tokyo

I had been holding off writing a review for Universal Bakes, as I don't even know where to begin. As a bread lover, it is by far one of my top favorite places in Tokyo! It is a bit pricy, but I go there quite often, and I love how I can always be surprised by a new daily/weekly/seasonal special. They are not afraid to experiment with different flavors, and that's truly something that is missing in other vegan and veg-friendly places around. I definitely have my favorites among their items, but even if they don't currently make them, I know that another tasty bread or pastry will satisfy me. Their soups are always excellent, the French toast is *chef's kiss* amazing! One thing that's missing is some kind of a rewards program for frequent customers to make me feel a little bit better about all the money I keep spending there!

Pros: Always new flavors

Cons: French toast is only available in the afternoon

Lovely little bakery

Lovely little bakery with a delicious
but small selection of products. Love the matcha hazelnut scone. Would be nice if they had a few more savoury options.

Come out of your way to eat here!

I hear earlier is better if you want a wider selection. Indeed, I came at 9 on a Thursday and left with a big bag of a huge variety of breads and pastries. The lovely neighborhood bakery welcomed me a block away with intoxicating smells, and the staff was helpful and delightful. The food is divine.

Beautiful and amazing bakery cafe ♥️

The stuff were super nice and the Melon-pan and other bakeries were really tasty 🙏 I haven't had these bakeries since I came back to Japan so it was so nice to have them 😋 French toast and soup? are available from 2 pm and I went in the morning so that was a bit disappointing but I'll definitely go again after 2 pm!

Pros: All vegan

Worth the visit!

I'd recommend Shimo-kitazawa to everyone who goes to Japan and now there's more of a reason to go here! Really tasty breads. I loved the azuki bean bun!

Pros: All vegan!!!, French toast with ice cream option

Cons: A tiny bit pricey for the size, but not expensive

Amazing little bakery

Our first visit was on a Sunday afternoon, so not many products were left. We tried two different buns, both delicious and an ice soy latte. The taste of coffee was strong and well balanced with the soy milk. Definetly going back to try more stuff. The bakery is located in a nice neighbourhoud, perfect for walking around.

So happy there is an all vegan bakery in Shimokitazawa! Their gratin pizza like things are incredible and I love their scones and croissants.
