¡Larga vida a Yukiko!

Relaxing Sunday lunch - Edit
We wandered into this place almost at random, using Google to lead us to any vegetarian eatery nearby. After 2 weeks of combini onigiri in Shikoku we felt like we were in heaven. Beautiful surroundings, friendly, attentive staff, absolutely delicious ramen, and who wouldn't want to make their own tofu at the table?? Yes, it is at the more expensive end, but so worth it compared to the ain soph burger of the day before (which was fine I hasten to add). We felt this meal was worth every cent for flavour, presentation and ambience. And the bathroom is great :).

Fantastic place - 100% Vegan - Edit
The Ramen plus starters and sides we had here was one of the best meals we ate in our 3 week Japan trip. Delicious and flavoursome. Plenty of choice on the menu. Service was super friendly and excellent as well. Definitely recomnend. Probably best to book ahead at busy times, was a small queue outside for tables when we left at 19.30 midweek.

Needs management improvement - Edit
We made a reservation for 6pm. We arrived and people were eating, the atmosphere felt nice and the place looked cute. However no server came to greet us for five minutes, one server looked at me but gave no indication he was going to say hello. Another member of staff came in behind us and we thought she was a customer because she didn’t even acknowledge us or say to anyone else there’s a customer in the entrance, she just walked past us into the kitchen.
Read moreThey then seemed confused that we had a reservation but we finally managed to get a seat. It took an hour to get just some water for the table, another hour to get the first three sides of our mandatory pre-ordered set meal as we made a reservation.
We ended up asking for the ramen to go as the service was so slow. We would definitely have been there for three hours if not, other couples who had also made reservations reported being there for as long. One pair had only order two ramens and were there that long! Around us, walk in groups seemed to eat and be served quickly, whilst pre-orders were left begging to be finished. One couple actually asked if they could leave without finishing their preordered set as they were so fed up.
Meanwhile dishes piled up on our table, with a server only taking them when the manager prompted them. I felt sorry for him! The restaurant felt like a one man show.
Slow service is a common complaint - but they’ve done nothing to solve it. A long line formed outside when we left having not finished our meal, we told them about their sister restaurant (soy milk ramen) which is just as good food but a whole lot quicker.
I would recommend going to the original and avoiding this one, even though the original is in a laundrette and looks dodgy!
Pros: Food was good
Cons: Extremely slow service, Dishes piled up, Poor service

Vegan Restaurant in Kyoto - Edit
Our experience at Uno Ramen Sanjo was generally good. The whole menu is vegan and its great if you want to experience a classic japanese restaurant. The prices are a little high and the staff is very friendly but unorganized. 4/5 stars.

Overpriced but good - Edit
Its extremely expensive for what it is and its not fine dining or anything. But I enjoyed the food, the ramen had flavor and the croquettes had a very nice texture. It was convenient that it was open quite late.

Best ramen I’ve ever had - Edit
I had the Five-pungents-free Yukizuki. The gyoza and the Yam and Matcha Yuzu Sweet Vinegar Pickles sushi. My god it was delicious. Homemade ginger ale also added a great taste. We finished it off with the chocolate cake.

Best Vegan Ramen in Town - Edit
The food at this restaurant is absolutely outstanding, one of the best vegan meals we’ve had in Japan so far. The flavours are subtle yet layered, with a depth and complexity that make every bite memorable. We tried the Gekka Ramen, shumai dim sum, and sushi, all of which were exceptional. This is truly a must-visit for anyone seeking refined vegan cuisine in Japan. Guests can also choose to sit on the floor for a traditional dining experience, adding to the restaurant’s charm.

Oh wow! - Edit
Just left the restaurant and are already planning another stop by here. The menu has a lot of really great options. We had the salmon and tuna nigiri, the tan tan ramen and the satisfying curry rice plate. We highly recommend people make time to stop by. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable about their menu.

Food is okay, staff is not nice - Edit
We found this typical local vegan restaurant and wanted to try it. They told us, that there are no spaces anymore and we should wait outside. We started the convo in japanease and they spoke english with us. No thank you or anything like the nice culture from Japan. We waited outside for 20min which is okay. The sushi was really good. Ramen was okay. All in all very pricey. The staff member watched every step from us. Felt like no privecy.

Rude staff - Edit
We arrived at about 7.30 pm and I was just speaking with the polite Japanese lady about whether they had any space as we hadn’t made a reservation. A very rude seemingly American interrupted her to tell me in English- ‘we don’t have any space’. I continued my conversation in Japanese with the lady, and she advised they had no spaces until 9pm. As we left I heard say exactly the same to the couple behind us, then he turned on the charm when they said they had a reservation. We are in Kyoto for 3 nights but won’t be booking. Such as shame as one of the reasons we love Japan so much is the friendly and polite interactions.

Way too expensive - Edit
The location is beautiful.
Read moreThe old Japanese style building was fully renovated with love to details.
The food is overpriced. 1000 yen for 2 sushi nigiri, almost 3000yen for a bowl of ramen! Both the ramen and the sushi lacked flavour. I had the same ramen I had at their other store a few months ago, but for some reason it didn't taste as good as the last time. Definitely targeting tourists here. Very sad as a local that food gets prohibitively expensive. ;(

THANK YOU YUKIKO! - Edit
If you eat at one place in Japan, eat at this one. Hands down the best food experience I have EVER had. I stumbled upon this gem by accident while in Kyoto, and made a special trip back from Osaka just to come back a second time before I leave Japan! It is such a joy to be able to experience Japanese food made with such thought, joy, love and care. I had the opportunity to meet Yukiko herself who is an absolute sweetheart and genuinely cares about breaking down the barriers to experiencing amazing food without stress or worry. THANK YOU YUKIKO!

Very nice Ramen - Edit

Good vegan food for tourists - Edit
Vegan food is pretty rare in Japan.
Read moreThis is a restaurant geared for tourists, and is a good spot for vegan food for tourists.
If this is your first time in Japan, and you don't speak any Japanese at all, then Uno is a great place to go. The servers speak English, and the food is pretty good. You will have a great time, and can rely on ordering vegan food (although they do serve fish, so do ask!). It can be very difficult to order food in Japan on your first visit, even more so for vegan food, so please enjoy Uno.
If you have some experience with Japan, then this place won't live up to your expectations.
It is mainly for tourists new to Japan, and it's way too expensive, and not really worth it.

Traditional Experience, Great Food! - Edit
This place is open later which is a plus when traveling. It was nice to have a more traditional Japanese dinner experience on our trip. We took our shoes off at the door, sat on a pillow, and had our meal. The food was all exceptional. The dumplings, ramen, sake, and dessert were all delicious. If you’re in Kyoto, Gion District, I would recommend this place.
