Happy, relaxing place - Edit
It's so nice to be in a place where you're sure everything you're eating is vegan. The food is delicious and there's sooo much of it! Prepare to be full of healthy, freshly prepared food.

Lovely food and great experience - Edit
Shingon temple in Koyasan that offers accomodation and also breakfast and dinner for travellers. Their food is called shojin ryori, and the one they serve to visitors is 100% vegan, with many small and delicious dishes. During my stay the menu was mostly based on soja/tofu, mushrooms and seaweed.
Read moreA very relaxing place to stay, rooms are beautiful, big and clean. With a nice indoor onsen. They invite you to join their daily prayers at 6:30 am.
Pros: Food variety, Presentation, Cultural experience

Beautiful Temple Stay Experience - Edit
Doing a Shukubo (temple stay) in Japan was definitely on my list of must-do experiences, and Yochi-in was a wonderful landing spot for us in Koyasan.
Read moreWe got to stay inside a small room facing a garden inside the temple grounds, which were peaceful as they were gorgeous. Careful though - the rooms are paper thin so it does get chilly in winter. Be sure to layer up and use the heater as needed.
The temple itself was a neat experience. They have an ofuro but each gender is limited to only two hours of use in the evening. Given it's a small place, it never got crowded and felt like we had our own private bath. They do close the temple gates at 21:00 but there isn't much to do in town after hours anyway, so time to rest.
Being plant-based, I definitely opted into their dinner which is the closest thing you'll get in Japan to a vegan kaiseki meal at a hotel. Dinner was fantastic and featured fresh, local Wakayama ingredients.
I also loved being able to participate in the morning prayer ceremony, where the monks chanted Buddhist mantras and we were given pamphlets to follow along and recite together. We got to explore the grounds afterwards and it was an uplifting experience.
The monk staff inside were very kind. They don't speak a lot of English so it helps to understand a bit of Japanese. However, there was a kind western monk that worked there when we visited, and essentially explained everything from dinner to the morning ceremony in English for us.
An important thing to note about shukubo stays are that they are not hotels nor ryokans, so it's best to cut the staff a bit of slack when it comes to amenities you'd expect at a fancier accommodation.
Thank you Yochi-in for a wonderful and reflective experience.
Pros: Fantastic vegan dinner, Warm staff, English friendly staff present
Cons: Thinly Walled Rooms, Limited bathing hours
