After reading Dr. McDougall's book 34 years ago, I asked my husband if he minded if we became vegetarian. He said, "I don't care, as long as you cook." The 7 of us became vegan (5 children; oldest age 13) in 1986. After a few months, driving by a field of cattle, I began to wonder, "Why do we kill animals to eat meat anyhow? I feel fine on the plant-based diet." I did slip a few times in the beginning. In 1992 I was lured by McDonald's Philly burger to try it. I took one bite and thought, "This tastes bad." I took another bite and spit it out, then threw the burger away. That was my last meat indulgence. Then, we were living in a country area in Georgia. There were no faux meats and cheeses. Today, there are plenty of easy options for people to try a meat-free life-style. My youngest, when we became vegan, was a baby. Having never eaten meat, she was, and has always been, the healthiest of my children. Going vegan was the best life-choice I ever made.
