Update 3 😂 2025:

Update 2023 🙃:
Came back 1 year later and tried the same cheese platter and a fish soup. I went to heaven. 🫠
First visit 2022:
I had a soup and a cheese platter. Loved everything and I've tried many vegan cheeses! The blue cheese and camembert were excellent.

We were glad we made reservations because many people came to the door to find out the restaurant was fully booked.
Read moreThe staff was alert and friendly. We had great food and delicious sangria. The entrees were all kinds of traditional Portuguese appetizers. The seitan steak was fantastic. Tofu and chips needed a bit of salt (the tofu, not the chips). For dessert, we had two cakes. We found the peanut and chocolate cake too salty. The cheesecake was okay. A good start to our five-day trip in Lisbon.

A bit overhyped - Edit
I'd been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and just wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. Everyone seems to be raving about this place and while it wasn't bad, I guess I expected more. I feel like their concept is pretty similar to Kong, but Kong does it better.

Great dinner - Edit
We were here two times and enjoyed it a lot. It’s a very nice location and food was great! The mixed starters plate and also the cheese board were outstanding. Everything else we ate was also great and I particularly liked the sparkling sangria (winter version). From the desserts, the peanut chocolate tarte was by far the best. Only thing that’s a bit off is that I don’t get why there are pictures of almost naked women in the toilet rooms.

Fine dining-esque place. The place itself is really cool, tastefully decorated. Staff was nothing but polite, attentive, and professional. Food was excellent. We ordered the cheese plate to share, it has a good sample of artisanal fermented vegan cheeses. The ravioli were to die for. As for dessert, the custard and the chocolate peanut pie were good, but the berry crumble was a delight.

An Exploding Vegan Scene in Lisboa! - Edit
Our inaugural meal on Day 1 (of 45 days) in Lisbon, we chose Ao 26 as our introduction to Portuguese vegan cooking. (We were excited from the reviews.) To start, it took us forever to find the restaurant because the address on Yelp! was an address long-ago moved from (now housed by another fancy restaurant). (We trekked up-and-down, back-and-forth, exhausted by the time we decided to call; whereby, we got the correct address.) The street entrance is relatively discreet, with a long stairway down to the restaurant. At the bottom of the staircase, you enter an open-aired, plant-filled courtyard, with a surprisingly modern restaurant with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Quite beautiful and sophisticated; likewise is Ao's interior ambiance. Chic. Host and waitperson were friendly and welcoming (after some "Não falo português" pleasantries on our part), with just a whiff of anti-English snobbery. Nothing off-putting; but, I did sense it in the Host's greeting.
Read moreAnyway, we settled-in with a start of a couple of beers the exhausting jaunt to find the place. (This is a 100% vegan restaurant, so I'll eschew with using "vegan," henceforth.) I started with an appetizer of "calamari" (battered mushrooms), served with an aioli. I really liked it. It looked small-ish, and was a bit on the cooler side temperature-wise, but was very filling. For my main, I went with the "octopus" (trumpet mushrooms), which came with a paella-like accompaniment. Both were really good; perhaps a bit one-note, but that's what I ordered -- I couldn't complain. (Jay's order was beautifully presented; and, although, he initially enjoyed the flavor, as the meal progressed, he said it was a bit too much "slimy" mushrooms. To me, it looked very "soft" in overall texture, with a lot of purée'd base. But that's for him to review....) ;)
Overall, Ao 26 was a very nice introduction into Lisbon's vegan scene.... (And there've been many others following...!!!) :D

Will Have To Try Again - Edit
On my first day in Lisbon, we embarked on a culinary adventure to AO 26 Vegan Food Project, a highly acclaimed vegan restaurant renowned for its fusion and traditional Portuguese cuisine. Nestled beneath an unassuming street entrance, the restaurant descends into a courtyard through a set of stairs. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows create a subtle challenge in locating the entrance door.
Read moreThe interior exudes a modern and contemporary ambiance, characterized by its hip and inviting decor. While the host exhibited a touch of disdain, the waiter’s warm and friendly demeanor made up for it.
To commence my meal, I opted for the “calamari,” accompanied by aioli. For my main course, I selected “Shadow Of The Mount,” inspired by the flavors of Alentejo. The dish featured a delightful array of flavors, including “iscas” of oyster mushrooms served with millet awakens infused with sea flavors, a consomme of mushrooms, a vinaigrette of forest fruits, and crispy woop root straw.
The calamari was satisfactory, but the “Shadow Of The Mount” left me somewhat underwhelmed. The combination of tender textures and slimy mushrooms detracted from the overall experience. Despite the flavorful elements, the dish’s texture was a significant drawback. I'll have to try them again with a different menu item.

The decor is nice and that’s about it. The food is not great. I got the Franschinha (or something like that) and i wish i read the reviews on here beforehand. It was really rubbish and did not taste like it had been cooked in the restaurant at all. It tasted like Heinz tomato soup poured all over the dish and the vegan filling inside was just awful. Many reviews also advise against this dish. We also got the tofu main and that was really really salty. The service wasn’t great, very moody

Excellent! - Edit
First visit: the meal deal of the day included beverage (I chose iced tea), soup (creamy pumpkin) and chef’s plate of the day, a delicious meal of tofu in Asian sauce with sautéed green-pea pods and other vegetables, served with rice-with-veg-bits and rocket salad. I wanted every dessert on the menu but limited myself to a perfect crème brûlée and, to take away, the daily “creative art” dessert, ferrero rocher cheesecake - wow!
Read moreI went again, on a Monday (great that it’s open every day of the week) and again had the meal deal, with lemonade, creamy veg soup and risotto and croquettes. They didn’t have a “creative art” dessert that day, but I had the warm berry crumble with ice cream and caramel sauce - so good! I also took away the Caesar Salad (Seaser) with volcanic quinoa (grown in volcanic soil), tofu and romaine lettuce.
At street level, there’s only a small sign, easy to miss. Down the stairs into a courtyard and entrance to the pleasant, greenery-adorned eatery.
The only discomfort for me is seeing things like octopus on the menu, despite knowing it’s not real octopus.
Pros: all vegan, creative dishes

Hardware: 5 stars
Read moreThe restaurant is in a great part of town. The dining area, overlooking an outdoor space, feels high-end and natural. The decor is impressive.
Software: 3 stars
Unfortunately the service left something to be desired. We arrived at 5 PM, having booked a table for that time online. The maitre d seemed displeased, and noted for us that we’d need to scram by 6 PM. Our server likewise seemed bored/ displeased to have us there. (I’m sensitive to the fact that we don’t speak Portuguese, so it could have just been the effort of dealing with us… but that’s tough to reconcile with what seemed like excellent English spoken by the staff).
Food: 4 stars
The food was good- although consensus among our party was that the food at Kong and Organi were even better. The desserts were a knockout though, and 26 has by far the best wine menu.

Fully vegan restaurant offering traditional local foods - Edit
We had a decent meal, ordering the Friends Dinner, a cheese board, and the Francesinha. Everything was ok. The Friends Dinner offered a wonderful variety, but the standout for me was definitely the babaganoush—perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The cheese board was also well-curated, and the Francesinha was rich and satisfying, however it may not be for everyone. I recommend this place for a traditional Portuguese dining experience with friends. I will say it’s not the best vegan food I’ve ever had but worth the try.

Overrated - Edit
The restaurant is very cozy and pleasant. However, I think the food is overrated. Three dishes from the "Portugues starters board" are made with mushrooms with similar flavors to each other. I liked the second dish, tofu a lagaleiro, although the cabbage leaves were very hard. The desserts were nothing special. The chocolate tart with peanuts was too sugary and the crème brulée, a simple soy milk in cream, I did not smell any flavor. Most disappointing was that as soon as we finished dinner, I still had wine in my glass, we were brought the bill even though we had not asked for it. We had not been warned that after 2 hours we had to leave the table. In my opinion, we paid too much for what we received.

I was excited for our reservation but it was a bit disappointing for us
Read moreThe service was patchy; the welcome we were given felt a bit cold although it did improve as the place filled up
I had the ‘islander’ which lacked flavour. The presentation was great though. The desserts were the high point; we had the peanut chocolate pie and ‘daily special’ which was a banoffee pie when we were there
The place was full on a Tuesday so they’re obviously doing something right though; maybe we had an off day
