Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

They offer tours of their grounds with opportunities to see some nonreleasable animals in their sanctuary and learn about local wildlife. They have a trained veterinarian on site as well as many staff and volunteers. They really care about wildlife and do an excellent job rescuing, caring for, and releasing many animals back to their natural habitats.

Pros: Rescue, rehab and release wildlife, Provide sanctuary for unreleasable animals, Educational tours

A lovely sanctuary

A genuine animal sanctuary where you can view only the animals that are permanently homed there. This includes sloths, a crocodile, monkeys and an ocelet. All these animals were either raised as pets or have long term injuries so wouldn't survive in the wild. Our tour guide Joanne was really knowledgeable and a lovely, kind person who was super respectful of the animals.
They also do a lot of work helping injured animals so they can return to the wild but you can't meet these as they don't want them integrating with humans too much, obviously!
They take on volunteers which I imagine would be a fantastic experience.

Pros: Animals are well cared for and respected, Lots to see (from a safe distance), Kind and informative staff / volunteers

Great tour and organization

Really interesting tour of a legitimate wildlife rehabilitation center and sanctuary. Florian was a fantastic guide. Definitely not to be missed. Lunch at the hotel was not spectacular. Only one option that was potentially vegan — the black bean burger. The hostess didn’t seem to understand our question about the pesto mayo so we had them leave it off. But with that said the burger and fries were good. However, the real point of the visit was the sanctuary and that is a highlight for sure!

Pros: A real rehab center, Great guide, A good way to see native wildlife up close

Cons: Lunch options limited

One of the highlights of our trip!

We did our tour with Neil and he was great! You actually only get to see a very small amount of the animals housed at the sanctuary because they don’t want to stress or get the animals that are going to be released used to humans. Their goal is to release as many of the animals that come in to them as possible. The sanctuary actually started because another sanctuary was shutting down and going to euthanize all the animals. The hotel owner donated the land and they started Alturas Wildlife from that. They don’t let you touch any of the animals, but you do get to observe them from a safe distance. Neil was telling us about how the permanent residents get their areas changed and constant stimulation so they don’t get bored. I felt good helping support their work, it was nice and sad to hear some of the animals stories. A great learning experience for adults and children!
