Not All Clear Skies - Edit
Given that the name of this restaurant conjures up images of clear, blue vistas, it was somewhat ironic that my journey here was shrouded in a thick haze of fog.
Read moreThese atmospheric conditions proved to be prescient of my overall experience – I could see the outline of their vision, but execution was somewhat lost in the mist.
Unbeknownst to me, the format here was focused primarily on the plated menu items, with the self-service element acting in a supplementary capacity. This is a trend that seems to be growing in popularity, and when done right, it is every bit as good as the traditional all-you-can-eat structure. In this instance though, it didn’t quite feel as cohesive as it could have. The buffet sections were a little sparse, which therefore meant a dearth of items to tide me over while waiting for dishes to arrive. This problem could easily be remedied by having the sides that had to be ordered freely available on the spread – there is no reason anyone should have to wait a protracted period of time for a ramekin of baked beans.
This being said, I had very few qualms with the overall calibre of the food, and there were a number of items that really impressed. Chief among these were the rather unique but fabulously moreish quinoa porridge and the unassuming yet weirdly addictive fruit bread.
Another noteworthy aspect that shone brightly was the Indian cuisine. Both varieties of dosa and paratha were excellent, the sambar had a real depth and body to it, and the uttapam was downright delicious.
However, not everything managed to excite, and there were a couple of missteps along the way, such as the avocado toast and the falafel, but most disappointing of all were the hash browns. Anaemic in colour and just as pitiful in terms of flavour, they were the likes of which I truly hope to never encounter again.
Perhaps my grievance with the lack of auxiliary options is a little harsh, as there was certainly a lot like here. Yet, despite the undoubted quality on show, I still am of the opinion that something was amiss (not least the travesty committed against one of my favourite foodstuffs), so I can’t say that I would be compelled to return in a hurry.
