Cakes were mehhhhh - Edit
Sweet tooths we are, we went to BA for the cakes and sweets. The cakes were dry and really toooo sweet. Its a cosy little place, but in the ratings I prioritize the food, so no, would not go back.

Cosy lunchroom - Edit
I had here the sandwich chicken sate. The bread comes from Streekbakker Jorrit. This is also a good vegan pastry bakery. The vegetarian pastry is in the majority but the vegan options were really good. I took the roze koeken and a slice cake which were vegan for take-away home.

Best bananabread ever!! - Edit
Ohmy... their healthy bananabread is just out of this world and you get a very big slice, I came back for it twice! Their vegan egg salad sandwich is also very nice.
Read moreThe cafes Bairro Alto and Down Town are next to eachother and because we went several times during our visit we noticed that these cafes kinda belong together because one of the girls that served us in Down Town worked in Bairro Alto the next day. The staff also walks up and down between cafes during the day for inventory etc. I think it's a cool concept (their menu's are not the same). Bairro Alto offers a lot more cake options, and also offers picknickblankets and baskets so you can take your food to the nearby field. They both serve the same acai bowl though, just fyi.
Pros: Very affordable, Lots of cake options, Friendly staff

Various vegan options - Edit
This place is deservedly popular. It's very central (just off the Grote Markt if you're visiting Nijmegen) and the menu has a number of vegan dishes whether you want something more substantial or just coffee and cake.
Read moreAs of early October 2021, some of the vegan sweet treats included banana bread with matcha frosting, lemon cake with grapefruit frosting and breakfast bars. Other options like gluten-free choices are also available, if you're with a group of people with different dietary needs.

One of my favs - Edit
One of my favourite places to chill (or more recently for take away). My favourite vegan options are the 'egg' sandwich and their cakes. Really good. Also like the sport they are located in, it's got cozy back alley vibes

Big, bigger, biggest vegan sandwiches - Edit
Great menu with plenty of vegan options. Their sandwiches are stuffed big time...they don't take it easy with the ingredients. Go for the No-egg salad sandwich...great option. Also, they have vegan baked goods like cakes and pie and of course plantbased milk options for your latte! Love this place.

Lots of highly nutritionist options - Edit
I go here quite often, but my all time favourite is their typical salad (Bairro’s salade). I can highly recommend the sticky caramel brownie and the vegan banana bread (with coconut topping). Lovely cosy atmosphere. It can get quite busy, but just come early/late enough to be sure of a spot!

They started having a specials menu, which included new vegan sandwiches with vegan blue cheese. It was absolutely delicious! I hope they add it to the main menu.

Even though there is not even a single item that is actually vegan in the menu, staff is more than happy to veganize their food items for you! They also have some lactose free and vegan sweet treats available.
Read moreI chose the toast filled with grilled seasonal veggies, hummus and chimichurri sauce and it did not disappoint in the slightest. The slices of wholegrain seeded bread were thick and flavoursome. The root veggies gave it that perfect crunch and the hummus added that creaminess that I love. For sure one of the most delicious toast sandwiches I have ever eaten. It hit all the right spots!
In the menu this specific toast sandwich had goat cheese but I asked them if it would be possible to have it without. They said that they could do it for sure and proposed swapping it for hummus! I also ordered a decaf cappuccino with soya milk, which came perfectly served. They also have oat milk available.
I found the staff to be super friendly, accommodating and chatty. They took their time to serve us but the wait was worth.
I also loved how pretty the inside of the cafe is. Simple but still somewhat artsy, which makes the overall atmosphere great.
I totally recommend this cafe to anyone who happens to be in Nijmegen. Food was delicious and quite affordable. Plus, when you add in the lovely and attentive service, it was an all round great brunch spot!
Pros: Delicious vegan toast sandwich, Great value for money, Very friendly staff
Cons: Relatively small cafe with limited seating

delicious sandwich - Edit
If this lunchroom was not at happy cow I wouldn't have gone there because there are no vegan items in the menu online. But I 'm glaf someone here added Bairro Alto because they know there what vegan is (we didn't get the non vegan free cookies with the tea but vegan chocolate instead) and the muhammarat sandwich is really delicious and special. They always have 3 or 4 vegan sweets and they are nice too. Even the oat cookie although it looked a bit boring but it wasn't.
