Horrible backward development

Unfortunately I can no longer support them after this backwards development. Now they have more vegetarian than vegan items on the menu and less and less follow a zero waste approach. I have not checked the bakery items though, but honestly just go to Sanctuary for the sweets and skip this place. I really hope they will feel the consequences of their decisions. :(

Great breakfast/lunch spot and bakery. The lunch bread stacks are quite pricey, but the taste combination is really yummy. I also took some goodies home and they were sooo delicious, even after a while in my bag. The chocolate croissant is flaky and greasy and chocolatey and yummy!! (Still best to eat fresh) I will keep coming back for more!!

The pastries are nice!

The pastries are vegan and delicious. It’s also nice to sit there. But they changed from being vegan to vegetarian, which seems completely stupid and not a very forward way of changing. The staff is mostly nice, but sometimes quite rude.

Former vegan bakery added dairy and eggs to their menu. 😢

Used to be one of Berlin's best vegan places (if not the best). However, in the summer of 2024, Frea Bakery added eggs and dairy to their menu. Frea Bakery's kitchen is so small that it is practically impossible to avoid cross-contamination. Therefore this place is sadly no longer suitable for vegans.

Updated from previous review on 2024-07-29

Cons: Former vegan bakery not vegan anymore, Now more non-vegan than vegan items on the menu, Cross-contamination in small kitchen

would've been 5 stars

if they haven't had added non-vegan items to their menu and hence broke all our vegan hearts (and, even worse, all the animal's), it would've been a 5 star venue for me.

i think vegan bakeries are still way too rare and i was so excited to visit this (now ex- but back then still a)vegan bakery.
well, i tried the filled croissant and it was very good and also available for a good price. for me, it was still special because they have not-so-common products. however, i heard other people saying they didn't only add non-vegan items to their offer but also replaced vegan ones which is even worse. i am very disappointed of this development

also, the frea bakery is not wheelchair accessible and you have to order inside so it's impossible as a wheelchair user to visit this place alone.

Pros: some nice vegan options

Cons: added non-vegan items, replaced vegan offers with non-vegan, ⛔️♿ because of stairs, card payment only

No longer vegan

This used to be an amazing vegan cafe and bakery. I visited regularly and loved their food. I was horribly disappointed to learn they are no longer vegan and will not return.

So sad

Me and my (non vegan) sister visited Berlin from May 20th to May 26th. I had made an itinerary for all the vegan places I wanted to visit and Frea (both the bakery and the restaurant) were on the top of that list.
I had already written part of my review when I learned about Frea the Bakery stepping back in time and adding animal suffering to their menu.
At first I contemplated not adding a review at all, but I did enjoy what they served when I was there, so did my sister, and it just really saddens me that a bakery that is this popular resorts to animal suffering to "widen their appeal".
So I've decided to write a new review.

This written review is only valid for their fully vegan time/menu pre June 2024. The amount of stars given is for their decision to add animal suffering to their menu.

----------------------------------
The first day my sister and I visited I got the Spandauer and a cardamom croissant. My sister als got a cardamom croissant and a savory croissant. We both highly enjoyed our breakfast. The cardamom croissants were by far the favorites, though the Spandauer was absolutely amazing as well. The savory croissant was good but not super special.
Drinks (1 decaf cappuccino and 1 chai latte) were good but expensive. Adding €0.80 for decaf coffee is excessive imo.
We decided to return for breakfast the following day too since we enjoyed their pastries so much!
Second day I had the pistachio croissant which was good, but I felt like the filling was too focused in the middle which threw the whole croissant off balance. It was plain croissant on both ends and then only the middle part had pistachio filling which was way to much for such a small space which caused it to be seeping, dripping, out of the croissant all over the very small plate and my face. If possible I'd like to see the filling more evenly spread throughout the whole croissant.
All in all we highly enjoyed their menu and delicious foods. So much so that we bought a couple extra of our favorites to take home with us.
----------------------------------

What added to the experience is that I managed to get my sister who is neither vegan nor vegetarian to come with me to all-vegan (mostly zero waste or sustainable) eateries every day and she loved every bit of it. I didn't mind paying the high prices Frea the Bakery was asking because they were 100% Vegan and zero waste and sustainable. Had Frea been vegetarian when we visited we would have skipped and chosen another, vegan, bakery.

Pros: When they were vegan their pastries were great, When they were vegan they held up to their standar, At least they tried? I guess?

Cons: They've lost their integrity, They added animal suffering to their menu, Not sustainable or zero waste anymore. Expensive

NO LONGER VEGAN

Update: they have started selling things with eggs and dairy!!! Don't come here! What a shame and what a disgusting thing to do to the animals who are tortured for eggs and dairy, and to their customers!

Tried the avocado toast, a spandauer and a pistachio cake. Everything was amazing, I inhaled the food

Go somewhere else

Close to Frea Bakery are vegan places that are worth supporting: Sanctuary and Sakura. Please don't support a bakery that goes backwards.

Not vegan anymore

Used to be my favorite bakery in Berlin.
Now sells eggs and mozzarella. Not a save space for vegans anymore. Sad day for Berlin. So animal cruelty is now their startegy.

Changed for the worse

Update May 2024:
They changed their menu, there's only four different dishes: three a version of bread/ toast and overnight oats. They don't have the savoury plate anymore for example.
Prices increased and also the reusable towels in the bathrooms were changed for single use. I also saw milk from tetra paks. Zero waste?! Nope.
I won't be back as I am really disappointed.

First review:
... Vegan and zero waste:)
Serves savoury and sweet teeth, savoury breakfast was delicious and very filling.

Pros: Homemade baked goods, Outside sitting

Cons: No more zero waste

Sad that they’re not fully vegan anymore

I’m glad I saw a post online from a customer saying they’re no longer 100% vegan, or I would have of course assumed their newly added eggs and cheese menu items were vegan versions. There are other great vegan places quite close by that I’ll be giving my money to in the future, really sad to see businesses move away from environmentally friendly food and toward animal cruelty.

2 Sterne sind zu wenig!!

Always a place to go!

Would rather give one star for ethical reasons

Frea was a very popular place for a while now and I guess every vegan person in Berlin has been there at least once. Today we found out that they are no longer vegan which was a huge shock because it was not openly advertised. So not only did they choose to betray their loyal vegan customers, they also chose to do so quietly. Still shaking my head in absolute disbelief.

Cons: Used to be vegan but chose to add animal products , Biggest disappointment in years

Nicht mehr Vegan!

Sie haben jetzt Eier und Käse aus "guter" Haltung in die Karte aufgenommen und sind somit nicht mehr länger Vegan! Es ist so absurd, ich könnte kotzen.

Pros: Nichts, Nichts, Nichts

Cons: Nicht Vegan, Nicht mehr Vegan, Nicht mehr rein Vegan

Great coffee, pastries and brunch

We got the savory plate and a pastry and liked it so much we came back the next day to try their toasts. The savory plate was my favorite—loved the miso hummus, the kimchi and mushrooms. My partner was very into the hollandaise and potato mille-feuilles. I also enjoyed the flatbread toast. The coffee here was the best we had in Berlin.

Update: With much regret, I had to report this place is no longer vegan. They also don’t have the savory breakfast plate anymore, but rather have several options with animal products. Most of their pastries are still vegan but be sure to check. -1 star

The best vegan pastries I've had

This place has become a staple for my Berlin visits and is top of the list when planning what to eat. The pastry is light and always has a good crispy snap to it.

The cardamom croissant is my highlight. It's a bit like a monkey bread with little bits to tear off and eat. It's sweet and sticky with a nice hint of cardamom to it.

The pistachio croissant is excellent too. A lovely croissant filled generously with a tasty pistachio custard with lots of vanilla too.

The vanilla spandauer is great too. It has lots of lovely vanilla custard and is good and crispy around the edges but does lose some of that in the base.

We had a couple of tomato and potato pastries to take away for lunch. They were a bit disappointing, the pastry was nice but the filling was pretty meagre.
