No frills, late night treat

Fried potatoes with options to add vegan cheese, vegan gravy, and vegan bacon bits. Served piping hot. Delicious if you’re in the mood. Minimal interior.

Vegans beware!

I've held off from supplying this review to see if the restuarant would reply to my email. I will edit this review if I do get a response of some kind. I

I ate there late on May 4th after flight delays meant that I was too late to get to my planned dining venue of the nearby and completely vegan Meet at Yaletown. This was about the only place in Happy Cow still open and so I gave it a try. It did have poutine labeled as vegan and it was a busy late night food stop so I watched carefully as they were preparing things.

The woman who had taken my order did correct the guy making the food and I heard the word "vegan" being repeatedly said amongst a language that I could not identify. In the end she took over and did go an apply some different gravy so I felt reassured. When I saw her applying cheese from the same container that the guy had used I did ask "is that vegan cheese?" in case she had forgotten and she emphatically replied "yes - vegan" so I felt reassured.

When I got back to my hotel and started to eat I felt kind of queasy so I looked up the reviews again on Happy Cow and read comments about people initially being given the non-vegan option. More concerningly, the pictures of the vegan poutine did not match what I was given - the pictures showed smaller chunks of cheese so I became concerned that the server did not understand the distinction between vegetarian and vegan. I totally understand that if this was the case then it is down to an individual error and such a risk is inevitable when eating anywhere non-vegan but I would have appreciated some kind of response from the restaurant management - either to reassure me that I am just being paranoid and that I was given vegan cheese as requested, or else an apology and assurance that the woman in question would get informed about the difference to avoid future such incidents.

Pros: Open late

Cons: Questionable vegan food, Challenging to communicate

Great Poutine

I’ve never had poutine before so can’t say whether or not it was authentic but I can say it was very tasty. Just make sure you definitely get a vegan one as they made me a non vegan one first (I think it was my accent, I asked for a small vegan poutine and they thought I said smoked meat poutine. No problem as they swapped it right away).

Late Night Option

Nice late night option in the area. It was great tasting and consistently had gravy and cheese throughout as opposed to just on top. They were out of the bacon bits when I went but it was delicious without.

Great vegan poutine!

I’m a real connoisseur of vegan poutine, and this is the place I hit up most frequently. Great vegan option, good portions!

Pros: Vegan poutine!

Cons: There isn’t one closer to my home

Great fries

I love Fritz’s vegan option. Make sure you go to the Davie Fritz as the one on Granville is completely different and no vegan option.

Pros: Great drunk food
