Serves meat, vegan options available. A 15-seat restaurant with a small selection of noodle dishes, a few of which are vegan. The owners speak limited English, but there is an English menu marking with items can be vegetarian. Confirmed operating as of Jan 2017. Directions: walk up the main street from train station for 15 minutes, keep eye out for the restaurant on the left side of the street, there's a picture of a samurai on the building's front. NOTE: Dec 2019 reported limited vegan options - please send updates. Open Mon-Sun 12:00pm-5:00pm, 6:30pm-10:30pm.

Super good option - Edit
There is a designated page for vegetarian options in the menu. Food is tasty. The tofu is out of this world - must try!

THE MOST AMAZING TOFU EVER - Edit
This place is amazing. The main ramen is vegan (just ask them to remove the little fish cake) and the yuba Tofu is out of this world. You HAVE to try it. Creamy, tasty and soooo satisfying. And the owners are lovely!

Lovely Experience - Edit
Great service. The WiFi didn’t work when we were there but that’s fine. One page of the menu is veg options. The soba noodles were amazing. Very friendly staff.

Splendid tofu, but overall unfortunate experience - Edit
The restaurant advertises as vegetarian-friendly, but after asking, I found that an item listed as vegetarian contained fish broth. Despite the word "vegetarian" being used liberally on the menu, chopstick wrappers, and the like, the staff clearly did not know the meaning. To make matters worse, the waiter seemed impatient and disgruntled.

Great food and friendly staff! - Edit
As a veggie I had Yakisoba (fried soba) and deep fried quail eggs which were delicious. The staff are nice and super efficient, we were seated and order placed within 5 minutes and the food came out almost just as fast! The menu is in English and there are symbols next to all menu items as to what it contains (meat, fish, milk etc)

Very little vegan options. Only tempura, rice, edamame and tofu, Tempura was good though! I showed my little card explaining veganism and although some other reviews suggest the udon was vegan. The chef confirmed it was not

Fish in food - Edit
The place has a big 'vegetarians welcome' commercial outside, however there was narutomaki (pressed fish) in our vegetarian udon. Taste was ok. 300m down the street you can get vegetarian gyoza.

The first impression wasnt so good. From the guy (owner) you can not expect a welcome. All what he does is pointed us to a table.

Yummy noodles - Edit
I went here on 28 May 2018. Like others have said there is only one dish that is vegan but it was actually really tasty! They were really nice thick noodles with vegetables and the meal was quite filling. I tried to go to the only vegan place across the road but it was closed sadly, but in the end I was happy to be able to at least get a tasty, filling vegan meal somewhere!

If this is the only place open - it'll do - Edit
Read the other reviews. Basically everything has dashi in it. If it's the only place open, it's food - better than eating plain white rice from 7/11 (again!). The food was pretty average, I hate writing bad reviews and ideally I wouldn't want to turn anyone away from a store but, to the store: don't list items as being vegetarian if they have fish in them... Just make it without it!

Only one vegetarian main - Edit
There is a full two pages of vegetarian items on the menu (one page mains and second page snacks/ entrees). When we asked which were vegan they said only the yaki- udon was, as the rest contained dashi in the broth. Kind of miss leading and not good if you're vegetarian and don't check because it says vegetarian. The udon noodles are thick and nice. We also got fries but they were a little undercooked.
Read moreI am happy we were able to still eat here and find a vegan meal that wasn't just fries!

Relieved to find this warm and welcoming place with great food and multiple veg options. My sister and I both got Yaki udon noodles which were delicious and filling. There was also a soba option and a cold soup option-- specific page on the menu dedicated to vegetarian items.

Quick, cheap, and yummy - Edit
Stumbled upon this place on our walk up to the shrine, and upon seeing the vegetarian options on the menu outside, quickly entered. Staff were friendly, and an English menu was provided.
Read moreI can only speak to the quality of the vegetarian yakisoba - which was lovely - and my friend had the meat ramen which she really liked.
While vegan groups may want to steer clear due to the previous reviewers' reports, I would recommend this to those who are vegan/vegetarian and travelling with meat-eaters - we both left very happy!
Pros: Yakisoba tastes good, English menu, Clearly marked vegetarian options

NOT VEGETARIAN - Edit
Please be careful. Despite the huge sign on the door saying "vegetarians welcome" and a "vegetarian menu" inside, this place does NOT understand what vegetarian means and they will happily serve you fish-filled dishes without a second thought. Speaking Japanese helps.
Read moreThey have a "Tanmen" bowl that is fish-free, and tofu.
DASHI is a fish stock used in a lot of Japanese foods.
SAKANA means fish.
TAMAGO is egg.
Most of the dishes on the vegetarian menu contain DASHI and SAKANA, and one contains TAMAGO. Please be careful!
Pros: Good hours, close to attractions, has tofu
Cons: false advertisement

Not as vegetarian-friendly as advertised - Edit
Be careful. The clearly marked "Vegetarian" dishes may not be vegetarian at all. The one that we ordered had naruto (fish cake) in it. When asked, the server lady told us straight-faced that it was fish. This made us suspicious that the "vegetarian" noodle soup may also contain fish broth.
Read moreWe don't speak Japanese so we can't inquire further. But I would recommend avoiding any noodle soup dishes in this restaurant. The yasai yakisoba and yasai yakiudon might still be vegetarian. And the yuba sashimi is safe. But this doesn't make Hippori Dako more vegetarian-friendly than any noodle shop in Japan.
