excellent cooperative in Philly - Edit
On a recent trip to Philly I stopped in Mom’s Organic Market to stock up on groceries for my home stay where I could cook. I am currently living in San Francisco so San Franciscans in Philly can think of Mom’s Organic Market akin to Rainbow Grocery in SF. Mom’s has a great variety of local and organic produce. Hard to find items that you would find in a good well stocked natural food store or cooperative like Mom’s is. Staff is friendly. The layout of the store is a labyrinth that can be confusing like a rubik’s cube too far gone yet with a little patience and perhaps asking security, staff, or one of the regulars they can help you get your learning curve to navigate the store of organic natural food product heaven.
Read moreWithin Mom’s is the Naked Lunch vegan restaurant which I will return to have a bite there as it looks interesting. I am a proud graduate of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, CO where I received the William S. Burroughs scholarship. I did my thesis on William S. Burroughs and William S. Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch aka the cut up novel for which this restaurant is named.
Since I was in Philly two weeks I was mixing up dining out at the wonderful vegan foodie scene in Philly along with cooking at my homestay.
For cooking at my homestay at Mom’s I picked up the following:
Soymilk
Local and organic blueberries
Bananas
Garnet jewel sweet potatoes
Limes
Avocados
Organic granny smith apples
Red cabbage
Ginger root
Sweet yellow onion
I am pretty sure all the produce was organic. Mom’s has been family owned and operated since 1987. Great bulk bin items. Great produce. In a word, great. Mom’s sets the bar high for a natural food store. They are like the special forces of natural food stores which is quite alright in my book. Each day Mom’s states customers prevent 9,233 grocery bags from being used. Mom’s has banned over 250 ingredients from our products storewide. Mom’s has chosen to print their receipts on BPA and BPS free paper products for the safety of it’s community and the environment. In a word…Yes!
Pros: excellent cooperative in Philly

Great stuff in a great location - Edit
A great grocery store (plus toiletries, some alcohol) located in the heart of downtown Philly. All the produce is organic. There is some limited grab-and-go food items that can be eaten in a small area upstairs; however, today that space was not as clean as you would like for an eat-in spot (reason for only 4 Stars).

Pros: Organic fruits and vegetables, Full line of groceries and “healthy” toiletries. , Great location for travelers
Cons: Eating area was not clean

A staple grocer - Edit
I’ve patronized MOM’s since there was only a single location in Maryland. The variety and prices are competitive and Naked Lunch is always fresh and delicious. The black bean burger is my fav. I like to sub out the pretzels for roasted potatoes 👌🏾

Fantastic market with majority of items being vegan - Edit
Many options to choose from-grab and go and fresh made juices. Couldn’t decide what to get and could have walked around for hours.

Good store but needs new security personnel - Edit
I became a fan of MOM’s when I lived in the DC area. This is a fairly small one so the overall selection is limited. It’s still a good market option, and you can find a variety of items if you need a quick meal on the go. For example, there are a variety of sandwiches to choose from. The biggest issue I had was with the store’s security officer. It appeared as if my companion and I were being profiled. We were followed throughout the store and to the exit. I’m not sure if something recently occurred at the store, but it made my companion very uncomfortable.

Cons: Security is a little off-putting

Its cool - Edit
MOMs is kind of cool. I always find some weird new thing to try when I go there. They're pretty exspensive, but they have lots of sales on all sorts of things.
Read moreOn top of groceries, they have this beauty/healthcare section where you can find some interesting stuff. Cant guarantee any of it actually works, though 😅
In addition to the usual sad/gross non-vegan items you'd find in other grocery stores, MOMs takes it a step further by selling "edible" bugs in bulk. Bummer
Pros: Cool finds, Lots of deals
Cons: They sell bugs, Exspensive

Obsessed - Edit
Combine the endless vegan options with the environmentally friendly mindset of the company and you've got BINGO! Vegan options abound in all sections, The bulk sections are lifechanging, just bring your own containers to stock up on basics that are usually packaged in plastic or worse. Up front they've got bins for disposing of recyclables, compost, batteries, even those pesky "industrial-compost-only" jawns. You can even fill up a reusable growler of beer from the tap! Not to mention, everyone who works here is super cool and enthusiastic about the brand and the mission. They have their own free parking lot as well.
