Keen to return - Edit
I had the crispy tofu and the steamed eggplant dishes and neither disappointed. There are so many more dishes I'm keen to try when I visit again.

I can tell from the first photo I posted of Mother Chu's that it's been over 10 years since I last ate here. So long ago that I still used filters on my photos! It hasn't changed a bit since then and probably not in the decades proceeding either. It reminds me of White Lotus on Victoria Street (RIP). A small restaurant with a simple interior, always full of chatty, hungry vegans.
Read moreWe started with a barbecue bun each, perfectly steamed and fluffy, filled with sweet and savoury gluten chunks. Followed by sweet and sour gluten with rich, tangy tomato sauce. The balls of gluten were tender and "meaty" on the inside and crisp on the outside and held their structural integrity while soaking in the sauce, just as they should!
On the side we went for some simple stir fried green veggies that were perfectly done. I'm pretty sure they don't use onion or garlic here, which was a nice change, as the nutty roasted sesame oil flavour on the veggies came through. Accompanied by fresh ginger tea, this was a satisfying, comforting, nostalgic meal.

Casual dining experience - Edit
Casual Vegetarian restaurant, which doesn't use dairy or eggs. But there is honey is some dishes. We ate here for my sons birthday whilst in Sydney. Lovely staff. The food was delicious. Portions were generous. So so much to choose from though! Menu was quite overwhelming and some descriptions weren't the best. We ordered noodles with grated tofu and vegetables. What actually came was noodles with like a spaghetti bolognese type meat sauce on top with pak choi. It was nice but totally not what we expected to arrive!

Tasty Chinese vegan food - Edit
We’ve been coming to Mother Chu’s for years now (we live locally) and it’s always a great dining experience. Tonight we had the steamed dim sims for the entrée, followed by the golden mushroom and soy sheet roulades in black pepper sauce. Both were really good – the food is cooked fresh. We love the wide range of dishes, the friendly staff and the beautiful Chinese calligraphy on the walls. Highly recommended for vegans, vegetarians and omnivores alike!

Began Delights at Mother Chu's - Edit
I had been looking forward to trying Mother Chu's for a while, but my high expectations weren't entirely met. Despite this, I still enjoyed my visit. The standout dish was undoubtedly the eggplant nuggets - they were phenomenal! While the other dishes were okay, they didn't particularly stand out. I found the prices a bit high, and I don't remember the exact payment details, but I did need to use cash, so it's a good idea to bring some. The service was standard for a Chinese restaurant, but I appreciated the mostly vegan menu and those amazing nuggets!

Friendly staff, fun food - Edit
Yes, you can find great food here, even though you might feel overwhelmed by the huge menu. I loved the soy roulades from the start, not as satisfied with the pecking duck or the curries, but it's really a small part of the menu. Here are my favorites: Mongolian gluten beef, black pearl rissoles, mother Chu's treasure pot, and chili and ginger in hot pot with potatoes. The young server (probably the daughter) is super friendly, and compensates for the stuffy decoration. Just go with an open heart and ask for suggestions.

Hoping to make my way thru the huge menu - Edit
Really enjoyed the special eggplant with soy slices in black bean sauce. The soy was actually really crisp soy twists not slices, with tempura eggplant chunks, in dry black bean sauce.
Read moreI didn't enjoy the entrees only because they're not to my taste.
The crispy tofu with miso soup: perfectly crisp tofu, didn't enjoy miso sauce: salty but creamy.
Sze chuan soup (spicy+sour): more sour than spicy, didn't enjoy.

Tasty meal - Edit
The restaurant was very busy for lunch on a Wednesday. We ordered takeaway and ate it in Hyde Park. They provided chopsticks and cutlery. The friend rice and Tofu, Broccoli and chilli sauce was very tasty. I’d recommend this to all vegans (and coeliacs).

best (and only) vegan peking duck in the world - Edit
we shared the peking duck (! you have to order in advance 24h) and it was delicious. we both never tried a regular peking duck but we were in love.
Read moreunfortunaly it wasn‘t that filling (but still pricey: 68 Aus-Dollar) so we shared the crispy gluten after it, that was a 10/10.
the atmosphere also is a little cold like a cafeteria, but we‘ll still do 5/5 starts cause they had a vegan peking duck (omg)

A good amount of food, tasty and a fair price for a city like Sydney. It was closed for a month in the beginning of the year... I thought I would not be able to try it but I was able to try their food and I liked it.

We got a crispy gluten dish that was nice and taste like sweet and sour. The wonton noodle soup and bbq steamed bun was good. The stir fried hokkien veggie noodles were pretty boring and didn't have much flavour.

Best in the world - Edit
This is one of my favourite Chinese vegetarian restaurants in the whole world. I have been frequenting this place for the last 28 years. The quality remains high all these years. Mother Chu used to sit the corner and smiles at all the customers, sadly she passed away about 5 years back, she was in her mid-90s. Her daughter is fantastic and has been running this place efficiently all these years. Service is great. The best part of the food is they don't overdo the mushrooms or mock meat. They actually use vegetables and churn out brilliant dishes. Try their sizzling stuffed lotus root. One of the best spring rolls. I love their crispy tofu as well. I always visit this place whenever I come to Sydney.
