This vegetarian South Indian restaurant is part of a chain of hotels from the Karnataka, India. It replaced the now defunct Aamchi Mumbai. Open Mon-Sun 7:30am-11:30pm.
MTR exists in an incredibly competitive market (middle-class Indian vegetarians absolutely know how the food is supposed to taste and there is a higher density of such people here than in many parts of the subcontinent).
This place is very accessible for anyone on the city tourist trail and how lucky they would be to eat here. The dosas, in particular, are outstanding- they are things of beauty that shine and crack like eggshells in your fingers (don't ask for a knife and fork!). The footfall of westerners is very light, with many visitors handing over five times the price of lunch here for 'authentic' vegan mediocrity elsewhere. With even very basic research, you can avoid 95% of dairy-based products and there is always someone on the staff, or better still a fellow diner, to ask. If you know food, this place, SBS their competitors, and a few others might just be the culinary highlight of your holiday.
