Very disappointing food in a classy atmosphere - Edit
The interior decoration at Shewe is really classic and cool! Unfortunately, when the food arrives, it is very disappointing. I was here back in February 2023 and ordered the pad Thai. It tasted like a bowl of rubber bands, so I didn't come back until now. Now it is September 2024 and I gave them another try. The curry came out like a bunch of veggies and mushrooms randomly floating in hot coconut milk. The mushrooms were old and chewy, again, sort of like chewy on old rubber bands. Although the dish was plenty hot, somehow, the ingredients were still not properly cooked.
Read moreI also ordered the winged bean salad. Unfortunately, the sauce was so thick that it was basically inedible. It's not that it was too spicy. It simply had far too much sauce, probably about five times more than we would normally eat. The tofu was also very poor quality. I'm not sure if it was simply old, or not properly cooked. It was pasty and lacked any flavor.
Trying to dilute the intense over-use of sauce, I ordered two plates of rice. The serving was so small as to be laughable. The rice was the only part of the meal that I could actually consume.
I really regret leaving a poor review on a vegetarian restaurant because I support all veg venues. But in this case, I wish to ask the owner to please get in the kitchen and find out what is going wrong. At 350 baht for one person, I could eat far better food at a basic "Jay" restaurant three times over.
Pros: Beautiful decor, Free parking in back, Historic photos on the walls
Cons: Mushrooms and tofu very poor quality, Far too much sauce, Tiny servings of rice

Great potential - Edit
Extensive menu that is predominantly vegan with the exception of maybe 2-3 dishes made with eggs. They can accommodate any request or modification. The atmosphere and ambience is amazing, definitely 5 stars. The food leaves a little room for more, I felt flavoring was a little lacking. Overall a 5 stars experience, and hopefully they’ll dial in the flavors soon, it’s a great restaurant and hotel with the best intentions. Prices are very reasonable for what’s offered.

Reasonable, with some tasty dishes - Edit
Some of the dishes were good, but others were lacking, especially the tofu skewers. The tofu has very little flavour, despite obvious effort in preparing it, and the accompanying satay sauce was quite plain. The vegan nuggets were also disappointing. The nitri nut skewers were nice, as was the Tom yum fried rice, the stir-fried veg with sweet and sour and the coconut ice-cream.
Read moreThe service ranged from enthusiastic and friendly to lackluster and disinterested.
We'd hoped for better overall though, based on the recent rave reviews.
Pros: Some of the dishes are nice, Nice atmosphere
Cons: Dish quality/ flavour is varied, Service was inconsistent

Best for a special occasion - Edit
We wanted to eat lunch by the River Ping but found most of the restaurants closed. So we looked for a vegetarian place nearby and headed away from the city. I wasn’t expecting much, just the usual noodles and rice with a few vegetables and tofu. But we arrived to discover Shewe in a beautiful old original building, housing a boutique hotel, spa and restaurant. The staff we friendly and greeted us as we parked our bike, guiding us into the restaurant.
Read moreRather than just the usual rice and noodles, the menu contains a vast variety of dishes. Yes, there are the standard options, but we went for Stir Fried Kale and Crispy Vegan Pork, Mushroom Cakes and the Banana Blossom Salad. The pork is made from seitan which we haven’t had in a while so it made a delightful texture change. The mushroom cakes were deep-fried mixed mushrooms with a spicy sauce, always a favourite. The salad was a little spicy but it had a sweetness to it as well. I’d highly recommend all these dishes and a few more if you can fit them in. This is one restaurant that I will definitely be going back to.
Pros: Interesting range of dishes, Friendly staff

good food and service, but… - Edit
I really liked the food, service and interior. very chill atmosphere. I only gave 4 stars because
Read more1. of how they present prices:
89 baht for a dish AND 7% tax AND 10% service charge makes it 105 baht. never seen anything like this in thailand before and leaves a weird feeling.
2. my dish should’ve had tempeh but I couldn’t find it.
3. we got an egg even we ordered “vegan” and “no eggs, please” 🫠

Go for the atmosphere and decoration - Edit
I finally made it to Shewe Vegan. It is attached to accommodation, which might be why it feels so grand when you enter. It is a lovely building with a lot of character and atmosphere. I can imagine it being a great place for a special occasion or with a special friend.
Read moreThe menu has a wide choice of western and Thai favourites. Although I don't think I found a Red Curry or Phanaeng Curry on the menu. I was happy to see Tempeh is available in some dishes. There is a use of faux meat in some dishes.
My experience was not that great. I went early hoping to avoid any crowds, but there was still a significant wait for the food. They didn't seem interested in adjusting the menu too much to my requirements. When the food arrived I was a bit disappointed with all 3 plates of food. Prices are still reasonable even though the price on the menu doesn't include customary charges.
I would like to go again to try some spicy Thai food. Maybe that would be better. Anyway go for the atmosphere you will like it.
Pros: Beautiful building & decor, Tempeh available, Location & parking
Cons: Significant wait

What a find... - Edit
Part of a small boutique hotel, this 4 table restaurant in ambient front living room setting is perfect choice for vegans arriving or departing by rail as its close to the station. Lovely array of classical Thai flavours veganised. Sharp citrusy papaya salad, hearty platter of enoki and King mushrooms with kimchi, homemade coconut ice cream and mouthwatering Tom yam soup.

Thai goodness - Edit
Don't be mislead by the small size of this restaurant. It serves mostly Thai dishes, freshly prepared, flavoursome and with attention to flavour/ texture balance and visual detail. It's an unexpected find in this neighbourhood of Chiang Mai but definitely worth the trip

Really Nice! - Edit
I had been meaning to try this place for a while. It is located at a small hotel with a pool (note the hotel may serve non-vegan food.) The restaurant is located out of the back and to the side - follow the signs. The menu is large and has some rare items on it. I had the banana flower salad and fried tempeh, both of which I really enjoyed. Everything is clearly marked vegan and most items are.
Read moreThe food is a bit pricey compared to your usual Thai place but since this is such a nice setting and slightly upscale I'd say it's well worth it.
I am looking forward to my next visit when I'll try more of their tasty looking options!
Pros: All vegan or at least veg., Tasty, quality food., Has parking.
Cons: Some items contain eggs.

Heavenly - Edit
One of the very few Vegan Restaurants with a Car Park. You will not be disappointed. The food is freshly prepared and big servings with fresh vegetables. A wide range of choice. You need to visit many times to sample it all. A hotel as well but caters mainly for long-stay. Beers on the menu ( outside the pandemic restrictions).

Located in a beautiful old building, this restaurant has a bit of everything and all of it is fresh and wonderful! They use all organic produce and you can tell! I had a tom yum soup with noodles which was so fragrant and warming, I also had a stir fried noodle dish which was equally healthy, nourishing and tasty! Staff were very kind and informative!
