Not fully vegan anymore, but still great

First of all, the Black Sheep Inn is not fully vegan anymore - this should be clarified here. The previous owners sold the place in September and went back to the UK. The new owners aren't vegan themselves. Now, when an owner decides that for business reasons they change their business from vegan to not vegan, I am getting annoyed with it. But obviously the new owner can create a business model as they see fit.

The new owners, Kim and her husband, do a lot to accommodate vegans, who are still booking this bed and breakfast (we also booked it because it was recommended on the Farm Sanctuary website). The owner is a great baker, and all bakery items are still vegan, and so is the butter. However, when it comes to the main breakfast, vegans get Beyond breakfast sausages or tofu scrambles, while non vegans get meat and eggs.

So, now onto the review itself:
- The wonderful old building has a lot of character, and the owners do everything to preserve it.
- The room, we stayed in, was extremely nice. The two things, which could be improved: The mattress was extremely hard, and there's no TV anywhere in the building (there's not a lot to do in Hammondsport, everything closes early, so you will be back early in the evening; and we were here during the World Cup). Both of these things are of course subjective - there are board games and books to entertain you.
- The breakfast was plenty and tasty - fresh baked goods, pancakes, tofu scramble, salad fresh out of the owner's garden etc. That is of course the main reason why we chose a bed and breakfast.
- And Kim, the owner, gave a lot of recommendations regarding where we could eat as vegans or which wineries to visit.

In short - we really enjoyed our stay, even if the place is not fully vegan anymore

Pros: Great breakfast (and lots of it), Helpful owners, Wonderful rooms

Delightful surpirse

Booked a stay here just around the time it changed hands and wasn't aware of it until we got there (several months later). The new owners did reach out just prior to our stay asking about dietary restrictions so figured we would still be good. My partner is vegan and I say "good food is good food". Upon arrival the new owners informed us that all their baked offerings for breakfast were still 100% vegan along with butter, yogurt, creamer, etc. Which I think is pretty amazing that if you want non-vegan of those items you have to ask for it. New owners are absolutely learning and seem to be keeping mostly vegan with non-vegan options. My partner enjoys this because we both get to eat how we want at 1 place which is a novel treat. New owners are still building their knowledge base of what vegan options are around town but certainly had a few good recommendations with atleast 1 vegan item on the menu (plus isn't this what HappyCow is for?). They seemed to have learned a lot from their other vegan guests who haven't canceled and WANT to continue accommodating. I got a kick out of one owner saying they love when folks have no idea they are eating all plant based. Will absolutely go back, even just for the pancakes.

Formerly amazing B&B, no longer vegan

UPDATE as of January 2026: After posting my review from last year, the B&B was sold to new owners. Unfortunately, the new owners are not maintaining an all-vegan B&B. The new owner did confirm on 1/27/26 that they will still offer vegan options for breakfast, including waffles, french toast, muffins, and pancakes. When asked if the B&B will continue to be exclusively vegan, I received a vague answer clearly trying to cater to what they thought I wanted to hear (“we may have additional options when our guests have other dietary preferences”) rather than a straightforward yes or no response. The former Black Sheep Inn was truly a special place, where the owners were both proudly vegan and knowledgeable on local vegan options in the area. While I generally would support any restaurant with vegan options, the fact that the new owners took over an all-vegan business with an established vegan brand & following and introduced animal products without so much as a post on their social media to let people know is disappointing, and I would warn other vegans that the experience noted in mine & others’ reviews here will not be the same if you book here now.

My former review, from Summer 2025, is below.
My boyfriend and I booked a room for 2 nights. The house & rooms are beautiful and the hosts Miranda and Simon are so friendly and knowledgable about the area. The all-vegan breakfasts in the morning were outstanding. We are already planning our next trip back! Couldn’t recommend this place enough for a weekend getaway.

Best B&B Experience Ever

If you are vegan and visiting the Finger Lakes it would be inconceivable not to stay here. Simon and Miranda are fantastic innkeepers and they maintain such a charming historic home (built in 1859). We stayed in the Wood Room and it was perfectly comfortable for my girlfriend and I. The breakfast was phenomenal and extremely generous. They start you off with coffee, orange juice, oat milk, house-made granola, fruit and fresh muffins, and then offer you to choose from four plates (for us it was Full English Breakfast, Bagel Sandwich, Pancakes, or French Toast). We tried all but the pancakes and were blown away. Perfect start to a day exploring Finger Lakes wineries. Thank you so much to Simon and Miranda--we can't wait to come back!

Fantastic Vegan B&B

Delicious vegan breakfast every day. The breakfast is large and filling, with oat cereal, fresh hot muffins, fresh fruit and a choice of hot breakfasts. The full English is a must try. If you are a vegan thinking about visiting the finger lakes this has to be the place you stay. The hosts are knowledgeable about the local area and can tell you where to find vegan food.

Pros: Champagne and vegan chocolates in your room , Vegan shampoo, conditioner, and body wash provided, Beautiful historic building

Outstanding Vegan B&B

We loved our stay at the Black Sheep Inn. Miranda and Simon make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. The Inn is immaculate and the rooms are spacious. Hands down the best breakfast in the Finger Lakes. We can’t wait for our next stay.

Amazing stay with lovely hosts!

We stayed a couple of nights at The Black Sheep Inn and had a wonderful time. It was so nice to find a vegan haven in such beautiful surroundings. Miranda and Simon were so friendly and welcoming, offering tips for the local area and for our ongoing destinations! The inn's decor and furniture is very well-thought out and gives it a lovely homely feel. The location meant a lovely quiet night's sleep, with the amenities of Hammondsport just a short drive or walk away. The added bonus of Miranda's excellent cooking was the icing on the cake for us! The homemade granola and pastries perfectly complemented the hot breakfast options. If you are considering a trip to the area, this place is an absolute must-stay, we wish we could have stayed longer!

Pros: Friendly hosts, Delicious breakfasts, Beautiful rooms

Check this place out!

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Black Sheep Inn, run by two innkeepers, Miranda and Simon who provided the most welcoming stay we’ve ever had.

We’ve never been to an Inn or a B&B establishment and didn’t quite know what to expect. What we found was a gorgeous 1800’s building with each room having its own decorative flair and awesome hospitality.

To keep this review somewhat brief, I will just touch on the breakfast experience. This is a vegan establishment, but whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or an omnivore, give this place a try. You will be pleasantly surprised. I am a vegetarian and had some new experiences and it was A+. During breakfast, Miranda was often in the kitchen as the in-house vegan chef and Simon acted as the server, providing an awesome dining experience, filled with excellent food and great conversation.

We absolutely would return again. Thanks Miranda and Simon, we enjoyed ourselves!

Pros: Awesome hosts, Vegan , convenient to vegan opt restaurants

Cons: our stay ended and we had to leave.

Such a fun time

We live to visit vegan businesses, especially inns, and were so excited to finally stay here. The owners are super funny and great storytellers and have amazing tales to tell about how they got here from the UK. As soon as we pulled up, a tabby named Hogarth came out and fell down at my feet, such a nice welcome.

You MUST get Miranda's traditional English breakfast. It is huge and amazing and includes beans, scramble, potatoes, sausage, and much more -- we asked for it both days, though she had several other choices. We loved the homemade granola and took home 3 bags (they have a lot of cool merchandise). Also, homemade muffins! The weather was great, and we could eat outside every day under an umbrella.

The octagonal building is so interesting with a beautiful skylight in the upstairs common area (that is also where the fridge is). Check out the spiral staircase behind the front door too. There is a cozy pavillion out back with a fire table, where you can hear the peacock next door calling. Owners had excellent recommendations about vegan wineries and which ones offered snacks such as vegan cheese boards (magic words for my spouse). The Finger Lakes is such a cool area. We will be back!

Great vegan B&B with the BEST food

I stayed at this amazingly cute B&B last September and loved every minute of my stay. The owners are a fantastic and welcoming couple, the property and rooms are so relaxing, and the food is to die for. This is a place I will definitely come back to to relax over and over again.

Wonderful Vegan B&B

The Youngblood Octagon is beautiful inside and out. Not only do you get to experience staying in a historical home, but the owners are great hosts too. We were greeted with a complimentary bottle of champaign and vegan chocolates in our room. The rooms are immaculately clean and beautifully decorated with antiques. There are also lovely outside areas to sit, including a gazebo with gas fire pit. The property was walking distance to the village and Keuka Lake. They provide an impressive and delicious vegan breakfast. They even give you a few selections to choose from.

Would recommend experiencing a stay here for yourself.

Pros: Vegan place to stay in wine country

Relaxing B&B with delicious food

My wife and I stayed at the Black Sheep Inn during our visit to the Finger Lakes and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The owners, Simon and Miranda, were very kind and welcoming hosts. Simon was able to give us helpful recommendations for local restaurants and vineyards to visit and Miranda’s vegan breakfasts were delicious (we highly recommend the “full English breakfast,” if available!). The house itself is beautifully maintained and decorated and was a very comfortable place to stay.

Pros: Delicious vegan breakfast, Comfortable accomodations, Beautiful surrounding area

Cons: Relatively few other vegan dining options nearby

Fabulous hospitality

I was planning a trip through this area and was in need of some vegan food for my travels so reached out to see if there was any chance they could provide my daughter and me with a boxed lunch and dinner. They graciously agreed, and when we stopped in to retrieve our food, were treated to a lovely tour of the place by the very warm owners, Simon and Miranda. The house itself is beautifully and thoughtfully refurbished and full of history and other delights. Would love to come back and stay here! The vegan meals Miranda provided were fantastic, we were so glad to have them as the vegan options on our travel route were practically non-existent. Highly recommended!
