Not quite right

It’s $12 for a sandwich and a side which is fine for the quantity of food and it being a nicer place. I shared an autumn turkey and squawker with my partner. We got chili and pasta salad. You get a ton of pasta salad but it only has shredded carrots in it and it was super bland. The chili was pretty under seasoned too- it just tasted like tomato. The autumn turkey was good. It was on nice bread and the turkey itself was good but it wasn’t salty at all, just all sweet so it wasn’t what I was expecting. The ranch on the squawker was sweet and there was too much of it. The majority of the flavor was sweet from the ranch and then franks red hot for the hot sauce which is kind of disappointing. It was a cute place and there were tons of coffee and tea options. Over all I like the idea but I didn’t fully like anything that I got. It’s a cute place though.

Pros: Lots of drink options, Decent price, Atmosphere

Cons: Under seasoned, Bland, Everything was too sweet

Just ok

The past two years I’ve ordered the same sandwich when on special, The Presidential Pardon, and each time it is served differently. I’ve had it served to me hot, toasted, untoasted and completely cold. There’s also a 50/50 chance I’ll receive the gravy that comes with it. The last time I requested it hot I was told no and the bread was untoasted, dry and stale. There’s just no consistency and the owner is not very friendly.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Overpriced, Unfriendly staff, No consistency with food

I want to love this place. The food is great. Coffee is great. The new improvements out front look amazing. The hours are weird. It’s a coffee shop but they don’t open until late morning.

Pros: Vegan options, Historic building

Cons: Expensive, Serves dairy, Weird hours

LOVE THIS PLACE

I love just walking into this place. Great energy, involved in the community, and locally owned so our money isn't going into some faceless fast-food mega-conglomerate in some huge city a thousand miles away that profits from killing animals and ruining our health. It's HERE, making ushealthy and making OUR economy strong!

Pros: Great food, friendly staff, LOCALLY OWNED!

Lovely vegan spot place on main

TLDR; Cute brick coffeehouse/theater on main that is fairly cheap, good for dates, meet ups/meetings, events, or just grabbing some food!

I have been going to Volstead public house - > The Nile for almost two years with frequency changing from multiple times a week to once a month/slightly less. I love this place, lots of memories, events and hang outs at Zen Nights. I love most of the dishes/sandwiches they serve and their desserts and baked goods are delicious. Nothing on the menu is bad (I've tried almost everything) but some things are better than others .
In the almost 2 years of coming here I've only had 1 minor disagreement with someone working there and we both apologized for being less than understanding and it wasn't a negative experience at all. I only really have two gripes about this place. The first is the Coffee tastes burnt a lot of the time, essentially everyone I have taken there says the same without any prompting. Sometimes its good. Second gripe is they changed the "My Boy Blue" sandwich, essentially worsening the mock meat and bread. Other than that I have nothing but praise for The Nile and its staff.

Pros: Good food for the price point, Has very good Seasonal/Specials (McBluffin), Very active in the local and vegan community.

Cons: Coffee is frequently burnt tasting., They made the "My boy blue" much worse.

Love this place

This is the best vegan coffee spot in the area. I've had a few of the sandwiches and they were all awesome. Good spot to chill with a friend and have a cup of amazing coffee!

Huge surprise next to a concert venue

My husband and I were definitely not expecting to find vegan options in Mesa. We were pleasantly surprised to find Volstead connected to the venue we were attending a concert at. The staff was very friendly and the items are clearly denoted. They serve mostly what I would consider comfort food, sandwiches and soup.. totally up my alley.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: One bathroom

Not Much to Offer

This place has switched up things a few times since they've opened. They started with offering a variety of fancy grilled cheese sandwiches. I have never liked cheese, so this option didn't appeal to me. Then they began offering a sandwich of the month (which had some great features), but soon stopped. Karaoke Fridays with a special flavor of vegan wings were a thing for a while, and I was really excited for this, but this too was over before I knew it.

Soul Food Saturdays is another thing of the past. They had fried "chicken", greens, and red beans & rice. The fried "chicken" is not at all what I expected; it was more like chicken nuggets. The greens were not southern greens, but they gave it a nice try. The red beans & rice were pretty decent.

I had a delicious strawberry lemonade cupcake. It was sweet and very moist. I never see them advertising cupcakes on their social media pages anymore, so I am not sure what happened.

When I was there on Soul Food Saturday, there was a man singing and playing his guitar live. He had an amazing voice and it was the perfect background accompaniment to my dine-in lunch. I don't know if they still offer the live entertainment.

They offer vegan donuts, courtesy of Welcome Chicken & Donuts. They also offer bagel sandwiches for breakfast.

The employees were very nice, but the owner was cold and unfriendly.

Cons: not a lot of options

Great place for a quick and tasty vegan meal

Great place for a quick, no fuss meal. On our most recent trip, we both got the Squawker Texas Ranger with the deli side of the day. The side was a chipotle black bean and sweet potato salad. It was bean-forward with a sweet and smoky finish from the sweet potato and chipotle. The sandwiches were crispy and served on a great sourdough bread. They were filling and tasty. They were out of provolone but substituted pepper jack instead which added nicely to the mildly spicy sandwich. Everything on the menu is vegan by default but they can sub non-vegan cheese.
