Food mediocre, unhygienic rooms, overcrowded
I would love to only give one star but HappyCow won’t let me..
TLDR: currently a norovirus (everyone called it food poisoning, but someone was diagnosed differently in hospital) is spreading its way around and everyone we talked to there has had digestive issues ranging from 1-4 days. We know of one person that had to go to hospital, I’ve been badly affected for multiple days as well.
We stayed for four nights at Wonderland and while I can see all the positive things people have mentioned, I feel like this experience was a waste of money and time
Pros:
- Nice surroundings and friendly staff that speak English
- Laundry service was quite good
- Most yoga classes were good, meditations not so much
- We enjoyed the steam sauna and the pool area
Cons:
- There seems to be a norovirus spreading around the property and the hygiene standards (dirty bowls, rooms, etc) are not helping to eliminate it. We met someone who has also been to wonderland 3 weeks before us and just by saying “yoga retreat, Koh Phangan and digestive issues” they knew immediately where we were. So this seems to be a known issue no one from management is addressing.
- The buffet was not what I had hoped for. I’ve been vegan for years and have had way better food. Also I was disappointed that there was rarely any Thai food, mostly Israeli/Mediterranean food. Always the same 4 types of food got quite dull after 3 days already
- The rooms are not very clean, bed sheets and towels are stained, curtains broken, ants running around, the cleaning service either doesn’t show up at all or forgets to give fresh towels while taking the used ones
- There are no bedside lamps, so either full light or no light at night
- The classes are overcrowded, it always felt cramped. Teachers don’t seem interested in checking for mistakes or correcting them at all
- the sunset walk we signed up for was literally them booking a taxi and dropping us off 5 meters away from a small beach to then pick us up 2 hours later
