Several choices for vegetarian poutine - Edit
I'm a big poutine fan so I had to try Zak's. I am vegetarian, not vegan - I do not think they offer a fully vegan poutine (try Pure Kitchen for that). But they offer several vegetarian options. I got the four cheese poutine, and it was quite tasty, although I attribute that to the gravy more than the cheeses.
Read moreI stopped by at lunchtime on a Saturday and it was super crowded; staff seemed a little stressed but were still very friendly and did their best!
Pros: More than one vegetarian poutine option

Stale food and no understanding of vegan - Edit
I ordered for vegan nachos, I had to state “vegan cheese” and they served me with a dip that had dairy. So not happy here.

Vegan options but all analogs - Edit
I have to admit I’m not the target audience for this menu because all of the vegan options are analogs (Beyond meat, Just egg, vegan cheese) that I have a hard time getting excited about. They’re not my favorite things to begin with but they’re also so easy to cook at home that I get frustrated when they’re 100% of the vegan menu at a restaurant. I wish there was even a little thinking outside the boxed food (pun intended). Even a tofu scramble would be really welcome! As a result, I overpaid for a lackluster fruit salad because I really wasn’t in the mood for Just Egg, which was in almost all the vegan options.
Read moreBut I was eating with people who are more amenable to the menu offerings and they enjoyed it a lot. My veggie (not vegan) husband said his omelette was great and he had the vegan sausage links and potatoes with it. A vegan friend enjoyed the burrito a lot and said it was heavier on beans than on Just egg, which might make it a better option for those who don’t mind, but don’t love, Just egg.
Overall the place is cute, the staff is wonderful, and the coffee is botttomless. It’s a diner so I know it’s not earth shattering that it’s not health food, but for me simply swapping eggs/cheese/meat for a vegan version is fairly uninspired. I wouldn’t not recommend it, and would definitely go back, but I would only go when I was really in the mood for Beyond/Just and didn’t want to cook.
Disclaimer: this review is for brunch. I’m not sure what lunch/dinner options they have that might branch out.

Everything can be made vegan - Edit
The best part about Zak’s (other than the old-timey diner feel and the fact that they’re all over Ottawa) is that practically everything on their menu has a vegan alternative. Awesome place to go with non-vegan friends for everyone to enjoy. Their Beyond chicken is out of this world.

Very vegan friendly - Edit
Loved how many vegan options there are, and how almost everything can be made vegan. I was turned off by the prices at first but what they serve can easily be split into two meals

Everything can be vegan - Edit
Love this eatery with American 50’s style. Almost everything in the menu can be done with vegan or vegetarian alternatives. There are for example a vegan burger, but you can choose any burger and change the ingredients with vegan/vegetarian alternatives. A must try 24h open restaurant.

Cons: Ok… the lights could be cozier!
