Easy, cheap and delicious

The food is cheap and cheerful but delicious. A real Sri Lankan experience and great way to get a cheap meal. Vegetarian for sure, but yoghurt served with some dishes.

Pros: Delicious food, Extremely cheap , All vegetarian

Cons: If you ask for a large drink it comes in plastic

Newer branch

This branch is nicer than the original - it's further from the lake and temple by a couple minutes walk, but it's much more spacious and airy. Dishes are cheap and quick to come and filling. Friendly staff.

Really delicious, expect a wait

Masala dosa was so flavoursome and filling, I would highly recommend!!!! Expect a bit of a wait as there are many locals waiting for takeaway. Very spacious area, especially if you get a seat out the front.

OK for the price

We came here for dinner two nights in a row. First time was disappointing to say the least—lukewarm/chilled food and soggy dosa and vada. Second time was much more up to snuff, but I still found the chutneys a bit bland. I actually preferred the fried rice to the dosa.

Food was dirt cheap and came in big portions. Unfortunately I didn't see the previous review prior to dining here. But FWIW, I don't recall anything tasting of butter.

I feel like this is a YMMV kind of place. For me the first time was a 2, second time 3 to 4, so it averages out to a 3.

Pros: dirt cheap

Cons: inconsistent quality

NOT vegan

We went here and were informed by the manager that everything is fried in butter! Wouldn't trust that it is vegan. We didn't eat here in the end.

The place also didn't look particularly clean - I'd recommend Empire Cafe instead it was amazing!

Pros: Cheap vegetarian place

Cons: NOT vegan - fried in butter

Great vegan option in Kandy

We were really impressed with this place, particularly the service- the manager in charge of the upper floor was very knowledgeable about veganism, and went through the menu with me to point out the items that were suitable. The food was lovely, but it was the service that really made our experience!

Pros: Cheap, lots of good vegan options

Touristy

If you're like me amd prefer to eat with the locals this isn't the place for you. I personally think the food was a bit bland in taste and more overprices than others

Pros: Food came out quick?

Cons: Catered more to westerners so bland and no spice

Local Sri Lankan Eatery

This local restaurant has everything you expect from a local eatery but with a slightly more upscale feel. The downstairs is a order at the counter and take a seat affair while upstairs you grab a seat and enjoy all the vegan art work on the walls while you wait for the staff to come and take your order.

Most things are vegan. Be mindful of ghee or curd. We ordered the curry and rice (Indian thali). It came with a massive portion of rice, some salad and 3 curries for only 170 LKR. There was a side of curd (yogurt) that I didn't eat and a small dessert too but I couldn't tell if it was coconut based, condensed milk based (or both) so I left it alone as well.

If your eating upstairs I think it's customary to leave a small tip for the waiter as he will be the only one serving you from start to finish. We did and u saw others doing the same).

Pros: town centre, great value

Tasty dosas

Really nice place with a range of dosas for dinner and other small bites that you can add (like a stuffed ball that was advertised as an appetiser & that I can't remember the name of but which was vegan and stuffed with a potato dahl thing and was delISH). They won't serve the rice & curry in the evening but you can get fried rice - I saw a lady having this and it looked yummy and was maHOOsive!!!! Would definitely come back - a nice, local place with tasty, cheap food. What's not to like?

Pros: Cheap, Tasty, Vegan options available

Cons: Serves egg, Serves cheese, Not vegan :o(

best masala dosa of my life.

There is sometimes a bit of confusion with staff about what's vegan and what's not.

There are two locations and the one closer to temple of the tooth is more expensive, busier and much hotter, especially if you have to sit upstairs. If you can, head to the location near Kandy railway station on Peredinaya road!

delicious

Really tasty, simple dosa and gravy. Super tasty. Has the feel of a fast food outlet. The McDonald's of dosa, if you like. Don't let that put you off though. The food is great. Simple menu and at a very cheap price. Highly recommended

Pros: super tasty, very cheap, several locations

Cons: atmosphere of a fast food place

Good restaurent but not completely vegan

Good food and a nice place for vegetarians. Not all food are vegan and some may contain dairy. And they don't know the difference between vegetarian and vegan food, so better to clarify whether the food contains dairy or not, before placing an order.

Balaji Dosai

The food is delicious but be very careful if you want vegan as most of the items have dairy.
They also didn't seem to understand the difference between vegetarian and vegan.

Pros: delicious , inexpensive

Cons: hard to figure out what was vegan

the saviours of kandy

this is the only vegetarian restaurant in kandy (they have 5 branches!) and a real saviour for vegetarians like us. we ate here every day and it was always delicious.the snacks are fresh and cheap and the lunch packet is a good deal at 100rs,since you can ask for refills.
their sweets are really good for sri lankan standards.
the ulundu vade and susiyan are really tasty.
most dishes are vegan, only the special dosa is baked in butter.
friendly staff especially in the colombo street branch (they have more choice here and have all the sweets)

Pros: fresh and tasty, friendly staff, cheap
