Best Vegan-friendly Eaterie in Liverpool! - Edit
Can't fault the place! The food is always hot, fresh and delicious; there's plenty of choice and the service is outstanding. Staff are super-friendly; drinks are all vegan; prices are excellent. Have the garlic mushrooms and the mint choc ice-cream sundae!

Pros: All of them!
Cons: The restaurant is down some steps so may be, awkward for people with mobility difficulties.

When you're craving vegan junk - Edit
Down the hatch is a good spot when you've got a craving for some proper junk food. They have burgers, Mac n cheese, and loaded fries. A friend and I shared the bbq slaw burger and a Mac n cheese burger, I'd say I preferred the bbq one but they were both nice enough, lots going on. The staff were friendly and the service was pretty quick.

Really good vegan junk food - Edit
The food here is good, and is all vegan! But can be changed to vegetarian if you're veggie and want dairy cheese. The burgers and the loaded chips are really good! And the buffalo cauliflower wings were our favourite of the three starters that we ordered.

A must go if in Liverpool. - Edit
Every time I have been I've never been disappointed. The service is great the staff are so attentive and can't do enough for you. I like the way the food comes out as-and-when dishes are ready. The vegan cheese is an amazing addition to any dish it is in. I ordered the Mac and cheese wrap last time I went and was unsure of the addition of salsa, other than that every thing else I had was amazing.

vegan junk food heaven! - Edit
Down The Hatch is located in a cosy basement in Duke Street, but worry not, there's a big enough sign so that you won't miss this place. Not only vegan junk food, they also do milkshakes, beer, and various cocktails.
Read moreOn Sunday, they have their special menu; some appetisers, burgers, loaded baskets (fries/ tater tots with toppings, i.e. fired oyster mushroom bits, fried shallots, and sauce), and mac and cheese. The burgers can be made into a 'meal' (+£5) if you want the loaded basket as a side.
I ordered the Captain Jack Burger (seitan, slaw, and bbq jackfruit), with a side of tater tots (+£4) and an additional zinger sauce (+50p).
For me, the burger on its own is already a meal - the portion size was decent, and it was filling. The jackfruit is nicely spiced and has a bit of a heat. The seitan patty was crunchy, but since it was topped with jackfruit, the patty can get a bit soggy if not eaten quickly. The buns were nicely toasted and had a bit of chewiness. The red cabbage slaw adds a nice crunch to the burger, but it doesn't add enough acidity.
The tater tots were great - they weren't greasy, crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. The zinger sauce, which tasted like salsa, was said to be the spiciest one, but I found them not too spicy. I still prefer the sriracha sauce for dipping to the zinger sauce.
In summary, despite being a wee bit pricey, this is a great place for vegan junk food lovers, and I would definitely come again :)

Good - Edit
Nice vibe, and the currywurst was nice. The Mac n cheese want as flavorful as I'd like, but okay. Good sized portions! I would go again and try something else

Great experience. - Edit
Firstly the staff were very friendly, helpful - and funny in fact! No draught beers to drink but the craft beer I had was delicious and unusual. I wasn't massively hungry so only had the Vegan Pizza Mac(aroni) Cheese which was nice enough but I needed some salad or a garlic bread to break up the monotony of eating a huge bowl of baked pasta: obviously not the restaurants fault! My partner had the Katsu Burger and that was tasty. All in all a great find; we didn't realise Down the Hatch was the top rated vegan restaurant in Liverpool.

Read morejust.. damn, those portions… and the food did not go down for a LONG old time. we had 3 platters each and even after picking at each others’ food (and giving the dog a good amount of fries), there was SO dang much, and so thick. it was very good. just please come on an empty stomach.

Not bad but not amazing - Edit
Visited here with my wife during a city break May 2021.
Read moreI was really excited to go here as has seen loads online and the menu looked amazing. To be honest I was a little underwhelmed against these high expectations. The food was ok but nothing mind blowing.
We went for the 3 starter platter with garlic mushrooms, cauli wings and the seafood corns. This was ok although the corns were not fishy the texture was cool.
We had the northern poutine chips which were really good. The Mac and cheese was a little bland and a chicken wrap which was pretty nice. The cocktails were really good.
Maybe we did not order good things from the menu but we thought it was a bit disappointing. Foot was nice enough but not groundbreaking and didn’t make us desperate to come back.
Also pretty disappointed they offer cheese with some dishes? Why? It is completely unnecessary.
Pros: Varied menu, Large portions , Great drinks
Cons: Not fully vegan

Come with an empty stomach!! - Edit
Came here for lunch on Friday with some non vegan friends. We all loved it. We had the wrap and zinger burgers. Was all really good. Only thing I’d say was that the burger patty was a bit thin. Beware if you can’t handle spicy as it’s hot! The curry wurst topped fries were amazing. Only downside is that the woman who served us was miserable and made us feel a bit uncomfortable considering we’re such a friendly group.

one of my favourites! - Edit
lovely cosy place. the staff are really lovely and so accommodating. i tend to get a couple of sides instead of a proper main because in my opinion some of the sides are better than the mains! my favourite item on the menu are the wings. me and my partner have had the burgers before and have noticed that they tend to fall apart very easy, which sometimes makes them really messy and hard to eat. the hotdogs are amazing though! great choice of desserts and drinks too(: unfortunately the whole menu isn’t vegan so watch out for that!

Nice, but wasn’t swept off my feet - Edit
We’ve been here before a few years ago so was really looking forward to coming back, but if we’re honest it felt exactly the same, and if anything slightly outdated. The burgers kept falling apart and weren’t actually that nice. Some are seitan patty’s but were so filled with toppings we didn’t want so went for the soya mince patties, which are nowhere near as nice as beyond meat or anything like that. Tasted more like a bean patty. We also were shocked to find out they’re not fully vegan, when a place like this totally could be!
Read moreHowever, Huge portions, which is something to definitely be grateful for and actually meant we couldn’t finish our food! We LOVED the garlic mushrooms, but wouldn’t order the seitan dippers again to start. Way too heavy. Other food coming out looked good so it is worth a try.
We were really impressed with the social distancing and felt really safe and away from others. Some restaurants really shove you together and pretend it’s 1m. Staff were somewhat friendly, but again not wowed by the service.
Pros: Good social distancing , Delicious chips , Wide range menu
Cons: Soya mince patties , Felt dated

Lovely food and good prices - Edit
We had a really nice meal here. We did visit last year and the food wasn't great but I'm glad we gave it another go. The food this time had much more flavour and was delicious. We had the mac'n'cheese, corn ribs, breaded mushrooms and salt n pepper fries. Everything was really good. Would highly recommend. Only disappointment was that they serve dairy products, which was a sad surprise. Please go vegan.
