Must-go in Mendocino!

This place is very popular and I’m not surprised, they have awesome choices, good coffee, very friendly staff and nice seating areas indoors and outside!

Hit the Spot

Stopped here for lunch while spending a couple of nights in Mendocino. The Buena Vida bowl, and the Veggie Stir Fry (made into a burrito!) were a hit….definitely worth a visit as there were a fair amount of Vegan and Gluten free options that were clearly marked.

Great breakfast and lunch

We stop here at least once everything we are in Mendocino. They have friendly staff, lots of vegan/veggie options and everyone in your party can enjoy no matter their diet type. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I love their bagel selection with vegan toppings!

Pros: Great food selection, Friendly staff, Convenient location

Cons: Can get really really busy

Vegan burrito with a side of sour cream?

I ordered a custom breakfast burrito (a vegan stir fry in a tortilla). With a 10% tip it was $22.74. I’m glad that I opened the box. I saw a white sauce & asked what it was. She said, “Sour cream. All our burritos come with a side of sour cream and salsa”. Even the vegan ones?? I asked her to take the sour cream back. She took it in a huff.

Pros: They do have vegan options

Cons: Expensive , Still add a side of sour cream to every burrito , No vegan patties besides a chocolate bar

Excellent Buena Vida Bowl

I was passing through Mendocino going down highway 1 and used HappyCow to find this place. It's a cozy little cafe right in their downtown area, but I easily found a parking spot right outside at lunch time.
Upon entering they have menus available to grab and look over before going up to the counter to order, which I always prefer to do rather than having to scan a chalk board over the counter indecisively for a while. When I ordered at the counter the lady was very nice and friendly.
The food came fairly quickly and was delicious. I got the Buena Vida Bowl. I wasn't sure that I was going to like the tortilla strips, but they were actually really good in the bowl and I was happy with what I ordered. The portion looked huge at first and I didn't think I'd be able to finish it, but it turned out to look bigger than it actually was due to the tortilla strips and lettuce inside kind of fluffing it up. I was able to finish it all in the end and I felt very satisfied.

Pros: Multiple vegan options, Healthy food, Friendly and quick service

Cons: No wifi, VERY small bathroom - prob too small for some ppl

Yumm!

We tried the vegan panini option (which changes daily)which was the peppers, mushroom, kale and onion version with a cup of red pepper tomato bisque soup. Delicious. One of us also had the black beans, rice and tofu dish and it was very good with some crispy squares of tofu and homemade salsa.

Unfortunately the burritos were all pre-made so they couldn't be customized to be vegan which is a shame (omitting eggs or cheese would have made these good options)

Pros: vegan sandwiches and soups

Cons: expensive, burritos are premade and can't be made vegan

vegan lunch

We got lunch to go since options are limited long the coast. The bean and rice vegan bowls were very good. It's nice that their menu labels vegan items. They also had some vegan baked goods which we did not try. These were labeled vegan too.

Pros: vegan options labeled

A great option for lunch, or a coffee break (5/5 green stars)

Even though there are a good number of places to eat in Mendocino, we ended up coming here twice (once for lunch and once for a coffee & pastry) – it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to. Even when busy the staff members were friendly and welcoming. We collectively drooled over the new cookie that they’d brought out – a salted chocolate concoction that tasted as excellent as it looked. They make very good espressos, very good pastries, and also have some inventive savory items. Our Korean noodle salad was super-good. The veggie cake sounded better than it tasted but I think that was partly because I chose the wrong side (sour cream) and it ended up being a little bland – or it would be better if crisped up a bit before serving. Overall, it was a satisfying, healthy and affordable lunch ($5 for the noodle salad, $4.50 for the veggie cake and $3 for the cup of soup – kale and black eyed peas) made by people who cares about their ingredients.

I’m also giving them 5/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:
• Their coffee beans are from local roaster, Thanksgiving (all fair trade and organic).
• They use Clover milk and also have alternatives such as soy, coconut and even oat or hemp.
• Good selection of vegetarian and vegan items (now including occasional vegan pastries).
(Thanks to Jessika L. for sussing out the hemp milk and vegan pastry situation.)
• For baking, they use organic flours and seasonal fruits.
• They also use free-range eggs.
• Many ingredients such as beans, rice and tofu are organic. Much is locally sourced.
• They encourage waste reduction.
• They appear to treat their staff like family – appropriate for a place like Mencocino.
• They provide an outlet for local artists (great selection of ceramics for sale).
Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me!

Pros: Many vegetarian options, a few vegan, Soy, coconut, Oat and hemp milk available., Many organic ingredients (such as tofu).

Cons: Could offer a few more vegan items.

Insanely Expensive - Good Quality

This place has fairly good quality as far as the town is concerned - but some of the prices are nearly impossible to believe. For Instance - I just spent $21.50 for a bowl of soup and a large orange juice!! It was tasty and filling - but Whoa. Also - don't come here if you are expecting smiling and friendly faces greeting you and welcoming you to the coast - the register staff is always surly, bitter and basically unhappy with what they are doing. Also - you'll often have to ask to have your table cleaned.
Unfortunately - this is one of the only go to places in town to get some quick and fairly good quality vegan items. That being said - 90% of the menu is not Vegan - and probably 50% is veg.
Kind of one of the only games in town - fills the stpmach but feels a little bad afterwards.

Pros: A Few Vegan options, Fairly Good Quality

Ate there 2 days in a row on our Mendocino visit...awesome!

Fresh produce, fresh made...you can feel the love. Service is very efficient- you can tell they have their act together. They have simple vegan friendly options including soups, sandwiches, and salads or you can design your own. I had a BLT vegan style on buckwheat bread with avocado in place of the bacon. Piled so high, I could barely get my mouth around the sandwich. My husband had the BLT (with bacon) and loved it. Bread is thick. Also had the Asian coleslaw as a side that was excellent and the Asian noodle salad another day. Both made with a bit of tahini and ginger. Clean surroundings, with outside dining. This was a pleasant surprise.

Pros: Variety for vegan options, Easy service, not daunted by changes, Clean

Cons: Can't think of any...

Be careful!!

I had a wonderful pumpkin curry with chickpeas, added tofu and brown rice. It totally hit the spot. I also had a scone made out of Almond meal. Really wonderful.

I just ate there again and had a very unfortunate experience. I ordered the vegan lentil and veggie soup and when I got towards the bottom of the bowl I found some small pieces of chicken—very uncool. I bought the bowl to the counter and asked if it was supposed to be vegan and they said yes, then I asked why I had found chicken and pointed to it on the plate and they said a mistake had been made and that they were sorry. Decide for yourself.
