Consistently good service

This is a restaurant that serves a lot of animal products, but someone has clearly put a lot of thought into making the menu vegan-friendly. If you're in downtown Ottawa late at night and want to go somewhere a little fancier than Pizza Pizza, you might want to give this hotel restaurant a try. The sweet potato and black bean burger is excellent. For breakfast, the vegan breakfast bowl, which comes with hash browns, baked beans, fried vegetables, toast, and avocado sauce, is probably among the most original vegan breakfast options to be found in Ottawa. (Not all the bread is vegan. I recommend the sourdough bread.) I also like the steel-cut oats with the fruit salad, which is a little expensive for what it is but makes for a healthy and satisfying breakfast. You can also request almond or oat milk for your coffee. There is a Buddha Bowl on the lunch menu that also appears to be vegan.

The service at Grill 41, as at the Lord Elgin Hotel, is consistently excellent. But make sure to call ahead to confirm that they're open, since they sometimes close unexpectedly. Also, always specify when ordering that you're vegan. This restaurant doesn't currently get a lot of vegan traffic, which means some of the staff may not be familiar with veganism. Once, when I ordered the vegan breakfast bowl, the sourdough bread came buttered (with cow butter). The mistake was immediately remedied, however, and it never happened again.

Considering how good the vegan options are, it would be great if the offerings could be expqnded even further. Soy milk for coffee would also be greatly appreciated.

Pros: Excellent service, Great ambiance

Cons: Too many people eating animal products, More vegan options would be welcome
