WARNING TO OUR VEGAN FAMILY - HIDDEN ANIMAL PRODUCTS. - Edit
We had dinner here, October 2024 and were taken back at the authentically different style this thoughtful restaurant portrayed in so many facets of dining.
Read moreFrom sitting outside, with a small dimmer mood light to adjust as we pleased, to cute Panda chopstick holders … the night progressed with friendly women explaining Vegan options on the menu.
We started with a plate of Garlic Spicy edamame - which were so very tasty.
Then ordered Agedashi tofu & fried eggplant and Mixed vegetable tempura.
UPDATE :- so impressed with our meals last year we went back tonight and ordered exactly the same dishes …
Our waiter checked with the chef, as she was adament that the restaurant ” DID NOT HAVE ANY VEGAN OPTIONS !”
Imagine out horror when she returned to tell us that the vegetable tempura has got egg in it, the Agedashi tofu & eggplant has a fish base and the Japanese soba noodle salad has butter in the dressing.
We left … devastated - being Vegans for over 24 years, shattered that we had been deceived last year, when we sat at this restaurant and were lied to.

Friendly and tasty - Edit
Is this 100% authentic as-found-in-Japan Japanese? Not so much, as it’s definitely tailored a bit to more western palates, but was it tasty? Absolutely! Great setting and lovely staff. Food arrived very quickly despite being very busy. Would go again.

Great! - Edit
The menu will label a lot of things vegetarian, which also happen to be vegan.

Authentic Japanese food - Edit
There is a good selection of vegan options at Izakaya Ate. My favourite is the fried eggplant with agedashi tofu which comes in a beautiful broth with nori. The vege gyozas are delicious also.
