British Vegan Fare For The Common Man/Woman

Proletariat does an excellent job providing New Yorkers and visitors alike with British pub food that happens to be vegan. Yes, this pub’s heart lies in its myriad choices of beer, but the all-vegan menu allows us non-traditional foodies to experience exactly what it purports to do. And it does that very well.

The Cornish Pasty has a delicate, buttery crust, is filled with seasoned spinach, ricotta and walnuts and is accompanied with oil-based garlic and cream sauces. Phenomenal. The Welsh Rarebit - pieces of toast smothered in dripping cheese and topped with a portion of crunchy artichoke - is delectably guilt-free. The Zucchini Fries have an unusual smoked flavor and pairs well with the creamy aioli sauce.

UPDATE: no longer an English English pub and no longer in the same location. The restaurant moved one door down and is considerably smaller and the six items on the menu are not English pub fair. the restaurant that occupies the former location of the proletariat is a mushroom based restaurant with approximately 10 things on the menu. The two restaurants are owned by the same people.

Disappointing menu

Seeing reviews and pics of a full English vegan menu, was disappointed to see they only have a few bites and an impossible burger on the menu.

Whoever was providing the menu before isn't anymore.

Pros: Lots of beer

Cons: Small menu, Not as previous reviewed

Delicious food, great beer, nice atmosphere

This is another gem from Overthrow Hospitality in the East Village. It says it's styled after an English pub but to me it seems more like sophisticated underground bar vibes. Regardless, it's a comfortable place but can be a bit loud.
The menu is small bit everything has been phenomenal. The nachos and sliders are my favorite. The specialty is beer - they have a really good selection on draft and are happy to discuss with you. Order and pay at the bar. Beer prices are high, food prices about what I'd expect for Manhattan (and the food is filling).

Pros: Really delicious all vegan upscale pub food, Fantastic draft beer selection

Cons: A bit pricey (especially the beer), Limited menu, A bit loud for dinner

Edit: as others have noted, they have shrunk the menu on offer here so it's really just bar bites. This is because the kitchen is being used by &Beer next door (also vegan!).

Posh

Quite not 'proletariat' but posh. No seat available when I came coz only bar was open — on a Friday night. Cool part of town at Astor Pl.

More like a bar that happens to serve vegan food

I had the pasties, which were delicious! I will definitely go back (especially if I’m out drinking with friends, and especially-especially if they’re not also vegan — there are not a lot of indicators that the menu is plant-based [it’s not written on the menu, for example])

Pros: Delicious food!

Cons: It’s more like a bar than a restaurant
