Good food, good vibes and great staff - Edit
Food is always good, every time I am in Chicago I try to make a point to visit and am never disappointed. The Country Fried Steak has long been a favorite but is a heavy meal but those mashed potatoes and the gravy hoooooooweeeeee put that on anything I will eat it (vegan of course) Their Lentil Loaf was really great the last last time I was there and wanted to try other things so didn't get it this time but do think about it whenever I think of Chicago.
Read moreThis last visit I got Club Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and I am not even a member. It was really good not the absolute best Club I have had but a slight notch below it and would get again.
I also got the Thai Chili wings which are always good and made with their housemade seitan and with the lime on them it really does elevate them to a new level.
The jalapeño poppers were good but like every one I order all over the place most of them are mild and then the last one or two are the spicy ones. I don't know how or what but I get them all over and the same thing each time. I will say these need to cool almost completely the cheese was a bit too gooey but the flavor was on point. Ranch is good but I feel like it was a bit much for this but couldn't give a better option for a dipping sauce. I
You can't have that one it's a Coconut cake (with lemon) and it was good hopefully it isn't just seasonal and sticks around. I also got Donnie's Peanut Butter Puck for later and was good but a little on the dry side but to be fair it was 4 hours later.
Gotta hava shake, Cookie Dough Peanut butter is the only one I get and really should try others but I can't not skip that one.
I have probably tried a good 40% of the menu and it is always good and I wish I could get half portions and try more of it because I always look and go man I wish I could get that that that and that but I am traveling and cannot carry it.
Pros: Food is always delicious and comforting , Staff is friendly , Shakes are the best
Cons: Not all vegan

One of the things that signals a great veg place is when non-vegans love it. Had a great meal here. Such a great place.

The OG (kinda) - Edit
I know, it’s the second location. You get the point. This long running franchise has done things right. Expectations should be tabled though. It’s just a diner. Don’t expect next level vegan. Their mint chocolate chip milkshake is great.

This Place Changed My Opinion of What Vegan Food Could Be! - Edit
I first discovered this restaurant about 10 years ago on a business trip. Since then, I’ve actually volunteered to go back to Chicago for work—just for a chance to eat here again.
Read moreThis place genuinely changed my opinion of what vegan food could be. It’s absolutely amazing. I even bought the cookbook and have tried to recreate the experience at home, but it’s just not the same.
If you're vegan and in the area, you truly have to check this place out. Not only is the food fantastic, but the service is also exceptional—something that’s, unfortunately, not always common in vegan restaurants. In my experience, many vegan spots are run by people who are passionate about the lifestyle first and restaurant owners second, and that can lead to poor management.
But The Chicago Diner is the best of both worlds: incredible vegan food and a well-run, welcoming restaurant. It’s truly impressive.

I’d give it two stars because it wasn’t good but it wasn’t necessarily bad… which is what’s expected from any diner.

I think it depends on what you get. Kind of like Watercourse Foods. Some things on the menu are better than others. I generally order the breakfast bowl for brunch and the Reuben for my lunch or dinner. Best vegan Reuben. Their wings are good, too.

Fun vegan comfort dining experience - Edit
This establishment is located in Logan Square, on the western edge of the Chicago city scene.
Read moreOur food was delicious and plentiful. Service was kind and attentive.
The Mac and cheese was a favorite. The appetizer portion was plenty.
The Thai wings were nice and chewy, and spiced just right.
The flautas, with beans and rice, was a good comfort-food option- filling without overloading. I had half the next day for breakfast.
Pros: 100% vegan menu, Delicious food, Fun setting
Cons: Noisy, pulsating music unnecessarily dominates

Never disappoints - Edit
We ordered the poutine, onion rings, Cuban and Philly Cheesesteak (seasonal) with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. I only wish my stomach was larger because narrowing it down to these items was SO hard.

Humongous portion sizes - Edit
Now I pride myself in never ever leaving any food, and I scrape my plate for good measure. The Chicago Diner however, defeated me with some legitimately ridiculous portion sizes of a tasty dinner.
Read moreOur 'appetisers' (a person with a normal sized appetite could easily have had either of these plates as a main meal) were the artichoke dip which came with what can't have been far off a family sized plate of crostinis and was my girlfriends favourite on our order, and special recipe buffalo wings with ranch- my favourite dish of the meal with massive, spicy seitan wings.
For our entrées we got a country fried steak with potatoes and sauted vegetables- proper nostalgic diner food this, really good- and the radical reuben (vegan cheese). Nice, but very messy and I was honestly already stuffed by the time I got to it.
We shared a cookie dough peanut butter shake which was very very good too.
Service was friendly, food was out quickly- the place was freezing though, and I was actually glad to get back out in the summer heat!
Pros: Wings , Shakes
Cons: Too cold

Outstanding - Edit
We came to Chicago and the Vegan Columbus FaceBook page recommended us to come to Chicago Diner and even though it’s not vegan, it’s almost all plant based unless you specifically ask for eggs or diary cheese. Everything is vegan by default. Also we were told is a Chicago vegan rite of passage so of course we had to check it out. We ordered the Rueben and the strawberry 🍓 milkshake as also recommended. Also got the pierogi quesadilla. It did not disappoint! Everything was delicious. The place itself it’s very cool decorated. The staff was very attentive. We had a great experience. Will definitely come back again.

The Chicago Diner is an institution in the Veg*n world. - Edit
Isa Moskowitz once told me that it was the Chicago Diner that really inspired her to do her cookbooks and to open her restaurants. She said that she used to drive from Omaha to Chicago just to eat at the Chicago Diner. She’d plan trips to Chicago just to get to eat here.
Read moreThis is not the original location, which is on Halstead Street. This location is newer and more modern, but the food, menu, and desserts are all the same. Over the past 23 years, I have eaten at the original location and this location probably over 100 times. They really do a good job at this restaurant. It’s not fine dining, it’s just good diner food. To be perfectly honest, I always order the same thing, so I can’t really speak to much of the rest of the menu. Lol. I always order the Radical Rueben. Off of the brunch menu, I always order the breakfast bowl. I’m a simple animal.

The space is cool, retro diner, the staff friendly, and the menu extensive. The "Radical Reuben," however, is shockingly awful and should be removed from the menu.

this is my favorite restaurant! definitely get the reuben, it’s one of their most famous dishes. i also found i love the s’mores brownie sundae. the wings are good and so is the pierogi quesadilla! on my birthday i got a free slice of carrot cake which brought me endless joy.

edit: i do not believe they still take reservations

Food is so good! Must visit while in Chicago - Edit
I’ve been here twice now on two different trips. Their Ruben is SO good and large! It’s a good price for the size. Service is friendly and I’ve only ever had good food here. I thought they were 100% vegan but it turns out they serve dairy cheese, so that’s a bummer.

Impressive First Visit - Edit
I finally visited The Chicago Diner. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food was excellent. We tried the Rubin sandwich and the gyros. Both foods were served hot, fresh and excellent tasting. The portions are large but you want want to leave even a single bite behind. With the sandwichs we ordered mac and cheese. It was rich and creamy tasting. The food was so good that we ordered the chocolate mousse cake and carrot cake to go. I can't wait for the next visit.
