Some of the best tofu I have tasted

Our set meal was lovely - in presentation and taste. We enjoyed sitting outside, next to the river. There was a tofu that was very similar to ricotta, which was heavenly.

Beautiful location, delicious food

As other reviews have pointed out, reservations are required for the vegan meal but the service is excellent and the food was fantastic. The vegan course explicitly says they do not use any animal products (written on their website in Japanese.) if you’ve reserved the vegan meal, there’s no need to worry. This is more of a fancier restaurant serving many courses throughout the meal. All the courses consist of different types of tofu. It was an exiting meal for me. The staff members were all very kind and the building itself is also beautiful. We had a lovey meal here. I’ll definitely be back again! PLEASE NOTE! The vegan course is NOT offered at their Kiyamachi location. If your hotel is making a reservation for you, you MUST call the Gion branch.

Pros: Delicious food and drinks, Many different types of tofu, Beautiful atmosphere, traditional food

Cons: Expensive , Reservation required

a big dinner

We had dinner at the Gion location. That's the only one that has the vegetarian/vegan option. We had our hotel reserve the vegan rokuhara for us the prior morning. Due to our very limited Japanese, we couldn't reserve on our own. When we arrived at the restaurant, they asked if we at eggs. The entire meal was vegan. There was a lot of food! Even though we paid 5100 yen per person and one of our kids didn't eat much, we felt satisfied. The entire dinner lasted nearly 2.5 hrs. If you like different forms of tofu, definitely go here.

The staff was nice and spoke sufficient English. They also had an English menu.

Amazing Gion restaurant

We booked 2 days ahead and took the rokuhara set tofu/veg meal
Everything from start to finish was amazing. Not sure about the other location but the Gion restaurant was top class.
The servers were very helpful and explained each dish to us and what to do with the booked tofu which was refilled once we had eaten it all and each course tasted fantastic
At just over 5000yen it's not cheap but we were very full and took almost 2 hours for lunch
This set contains no meat fish or dairy
The surroundings of the restaurant were also lovely....see my pictures
Ignore the 2017 negative comments. Book ahead...book the set menu and you will love it as they catered for us being vegan

Pros: vegan and veggie options

Cons: wasn't the cheapest but worth it for th occasion..

Expensive, but well worth it

Simple and excellent food elegantly prepared. They have a set meal that includes fish and egg. I ordered the hot tofu and one of the tofu skin items a la carte. The hot tofu is expensive, but it is large, and they will keep giving you as much additional tofu for free as you like. The service is absolutely top notch, and there is more than enough English spoken to handle ordering. The location is spectacular. You'll probably need a reservation to sit outside, but the inside is beautiful too.

Pros: Simple, delicious food, Excellent service, Wonderful location

Cons: Pricy

Delicious multi course vegan, Tofu focused

Location: tosuiro has 2 restaurants, with clear local maps and photos on their English language website. We went to the Gion site: on Higashioji-dori btw Yasui Higashiyama and Yasui Konpriagu shrine. It's a few blocks south of the landmark Yasako shrine, down the street from a Lawson & across from a 7/11. It's an easy walk from the many temples in south Higashiyama, such as Chion-In.

Ambiance and menu: the Gion site has an open kitchen tatami room, small garden and small dining room with Western. Style chairs & tables. The food is Beautifully presented, and servers are friendly, speaking some English. The all vegan set should be reserved a day in advance, by phone in Japanese. We asked our Air B&B host to make the call--no,problem. Dishes included chilled tofu, hot pot, grilled miso tofu, stuffed tofu , pickles, soy ice cream . A fabulous splurge in a tranquil atmosphere.

Pros: Vegan. ( need reservation ), Delicate & varied , Tofu, tofu, tofu

Cons: Expensive , Must. Reserve , Limited hours
