Such a special experience of a traditional Japanese meal - Edit
Shigetsu—the restaurant near the Tenryu-ji temple—was booked well in advance so I tried Seizan Sodo. And I’m so glad I did! It was such an amazing experience. It felt like I was living a scene from a Studio Ghibli movie. It truly felt magical, and wish I could go back. Felt care for by the waitstaff and felt refreshed by the peaceful surroundings (both interior and outside garden within view).
Read moreThe waitstaff were attentive to my vegan diet and even had a visual diagram handy that outlined all the ingredients/components of the Japanese meal set in English. I loved trying tofu in many forms.
Cash only. Two vegan Japanese meal sets (Tofu Shojin Ryori) cost 7,700 yen. Seemed like a steal for the quality of the experience!
You must try it!

Japanese experience - Edit
We had a lovely lunch here. Food was tasty and beautifully presented. The main was a large portion of tofu (hot or cold, we tried both) and there were tasty appetizers. Friendly staff and clear information in English. We very much enjoyed the lunch, and sitting on the floor on tatami made the experience very special. Price is on the high end for Japan but for us definitely worth it.

The popular restaurant at the shrine nearby was booked solid, so we headed here instead.

Traditional experience - Edit
We absolutely loved having this experience. You get to sit on the tatami and enjoy the garden view. ¥7700 for two people, which is very pricey. Specify you are a vegan and they will swap out the one item that has egg in it.
Read moreTo be frank, the food wasn’t particularly interesting to me as I’ve had much better traditional Japanese food, but some of the dishes were still incredible. Tofu is always a win for me.

We lucked out - Edit
Found this place after discovering that Shigetsu (another veg/vegan restaurant in the area) requires reservation during peak season. The staff spoke some broken English, but not for lack of trying, and used google translate to get the message through. The service was terrific and the food was excellent. We were a party of four but were advised by the staff to order 2-3 portions and share. It was a set menu for lunch and came in multiple courses, with an illustrated description (in English) of each dish. It was a lot of food, and you can refill the meal, so definitely plan to share. It is set near the front gates of the Tenryu-ji temple. You are seated in a traditional Japanese dining room, sitting on pillows and tatami mats, overlooking a tranquil garden. It has a beautiful view that is a perfect escape from the tour busses and crowds.

Great Lunch - Edit
Came here for lunch with my mom and our tour guide. BEAUTIFUL restaurant with great food. It's a little more expensive as compared to the other vegan restaurants I went to in Japan, but the food is great and the experience is well worth it!

Simple, Delicious - Edit
We were here for lunch for ¥6480 for two people (August 2015). It was a vegetarian tofu lunch, but they easily accommodated my vegan husband with a simple swap of one item. It was also easy to find (not always the case in Japan). We sat in a Japanese style room and they served all the food very quickly and left us alone as we ate. It was a great experience.

Fabulous place!!! - Edit
This is a cozy litte restaurant in traditional japanese style where you sit on the floor at a low table. The hous is very lovely with a beautyful little garden. Staff was very friendly and the food was amazing! Dinner consisted of several small dishes. Considering how much food we got and how good it was I don't think it was that expensive. If you are in Kyoto you must try this place!
