Not bad

Had the knife-cut noodles (definitely not handmade) with olive vege. It’s topped with fresh veggies, which I really love. Some might think it’s greasy but I find it good. $5

Cons: Not entirely vegan

My favorite spots in town

I often go to Yi Xin to enjoy their laksa (penang laksa and asam laksa), but also many of the other dishes.

Pros: Good and usually cheap, Lot of choices

Cons: Some items can be pricey, Some dishes are greasy

hidden find in Chinatown

Not many ppl would notice this vegetarian eatery at the streets of Chinatown! It's a small shop with lots of vegetarian variety, must-try includes the Bak kut Teh mee sua filled with lots of ingredients! Saw lots of ppl eating the Assam laksa too - something which I would like to try on my next visit!

Pros: good variety, affordable prices, accessible, walking distance from Chinatown MRT

Cons: ambience is quite dark, small place

Wide variety of tasty & affordable food

Must-tries include their pumpkin dishes, herbal $5 Bak Kut Teh Noodles & $4 carrot cake with scrambled tofu which wasn’t too oily :) Other dishes include economical rice (which is around $2.80 for 1 veg meat and 1 regular veg & $3.50 for rice and 3 regular veggies), $4.50 spare ribs Ipoh-style hor fun, $6? buckwheat zhajiang mian, $5.50 spaghetti & $4.50 hor fun.

Vegan bak kut teh noodles ($5) was prepared with just the right amount of herbs & spices 😋 This is my favourite rendition of the dish by far! :)

‘Spare ribs’ hor fun ($4.50) came with a savoury-sweet soy-sauce-based gravy & bok choy. The soy-based ‘meat’ tasted savoury & slightly sweet, while the ‘bone’ stuck inside was actually sugarcane. This was topped with a handful of golden enoki fritters & seaweed crisps for that extra crunch :)

Tomato-based spaghetti ($5) came with juicy, flavourful tomato slices, crunchy seaweed crisps, & a handful of crispy enoki mushroom fritters. This was recommended to me by a nice random lady whom I shared a table with during my previous visit :)

Warm buckwheat noodles mixed in zhajiang sauce ($5.50) was topped with a colourful mix of raw veggies, crispy seaweed, & some golden crisps :D The texture & taste of the noodles is somewhat similar to the medium-width white bee hoon commonly found in fish bee hoon soup, while the savoury sauce wasn’t too gao, which meant that one wouldn’t get sick of its taste at the end of the meal :)

Hor fun in gravy ($4.50) came with lots of bok choy, juicy chunks of shiitake, tau kwa, & gluten-based mock meat! The gravy was sweeter than it was salty which was pretty unique. Wok-hei wise, I still prefer Tian En Vegetarian at Jurong’s Happy Hawkers xP

Spinach mee hoon kway soup ($5) came with enoki mushroom fritters & seaweed crisp toppings. The crisps became soggy very quickly in the soup but they nevertheless added a contrasting taste to the plainer soup :) The soup was a little milky (they might have added a bit of soymilk?) & a lil’ less flavourful than I would have preferred it to be whoops 😅 The mee hoon kway was too soft & lacked the bite I was looking for, & tasted of flour & nothing like spinach 😅 However, there was quite a lot of bok choy, soft tofu & three thick strips of ‘pork’ or ‘fish’ (I can’t tell), which added some flavour to the dish. Guess I’ll stick to their other dishes next time! xP

Pro tip: add a bowl of soup to your meal for just 50 cents! :)

Pros: Wide variety of tasty & affordable food, Central location

Affordable vegan food

This is a decent Chinese style vegan restaurant with a full a la carte menu of Chinese side dishes, noodles, rice and sweets. Everything is at an affordable price.

healthy soba

I tried this place while craving for soba noodles, and the fact that this place sells warm soba noodles was... rather strange. Definitely a unique dish for those who are more health conscious, but I think the noodles were slightly on the watery side and not as flavourful as I would liked. More like a Chinese style noodle dish than what you will expect of typical soba noodles

Pros: unique

Cons: occasionally rude service

Vegetarian Assam Laska @ Yi Xin Vegetarian

A revisit to Yi Xin Vegetarian at Chinatown, Temple Street. It’s just beside Dragon Gate Vegetarian which took over their old premises. They are an eatery serving vegetarian economic rice with veg*nised Malaysian dishes. There are also daily desserts and 10 other noodle/salad dishes for diners who do not want to go for rice-based meals. Usually quite crowded.

I was there for their Vegetarian Assam Laska (S$4.5) which is quite a popular dish. I love the deep fried seaweed very much – unique. Serving is big. The broth used is not too spicy too nor sour, tasty.

For me, I would love to have peppermint and sliced red chilli instead of green leafy vegetables and cabbages which don’t seem to pair well with this traditional Assam Laksa dish.

Simple, delicious

Friendly staff, vegan menu, lots of options. Everything on the à la carte menu is $4-6, dinner menu $12-20. Had the Penang assam laksa ($5.50) and carrot cake ($4). Don't sell beer. Next door to Dragon Gate Vegetarian.

Pros: Location, Staff, Inexpensive

Cons: Nothing

Yummy!

This restaurant was right in front of my hotel, so I could not miss it! It is a simple place, not fancy and not the cleanest in Singapore for sure...but so good! My husband and I had mock fish, mock prawns and seaweed rolls, everything was really yummy. Generous servings and extremely nice staff. Recommended

Pros: good food , nice staff, inexpensive

Cons: it could be cleaner
