Very good bibimbap! Best ever - Edit
I loved the stone pot bibimbap! It’s beyond amazing. Just perfect and it gets the rice extra crispy. Overall I had a fantastic experience! Only item I didn’t love was the lychee mocktail. I don’t know what kind of non-sugar sweetener they used but it didn’t taste good and I didn’t realize when I ordered the drink that it would use a sugar substitute. Other than the drink experience, the sushi and bibimbap were good enough to earn Franchia 5 stars!

Had the Rainbow Roll (which had vegan BBQ char siu, tuna, and shrimp), the Peking Duck Bao, and the Ube crème brûlée. All were really great - the Ube crème brûlée was probably the most surpising and interesting.

We started off with the shrimp and buffalo wings for appetizers, and my meat-eater friend and his gf said it tasted exactly like the real thing! The shrimp taste was crazy! For the main course, I got the Penang Noodles and my gf got the Crispy Korean Chili Tofu. Mine was good, but I couldn’t stop eating my gf’s - it was fire 🔥. The menu was so extensive, I had no idea what to pick!

Took my non vegan but gluten free mom here and she RAVED about the food. There’s a whole separate gf menu. The leek pancakes are amazing and the vegan shrimp in the spring rolls is incredible. Soy chicken rocks. we’re probably coming back tbh. Eat here

Love this place. I usually get the katsu curry udon. They serve high quality, veganized pan-Asian food (Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc). There’s an almost homemade quality to the food: comforting, nourishing, and not-overseasoned. Their decor is understated, elegant, and cozy.

the name almost got me on the first day of my trip lol. it was super close to the airbnb i was staying at, and since i had just arrived in the morning, i thought “perfect, i’ll go there for breakfast!” thank god i didn’t, because this is actually an asian fusion vegan restaurant and definitely not a café serving breakfast at 8am hahah

Read moreI love HanGawi and once I learned the owners also run another vegan Korean food restaurant, Franchia, I knew I had to try. And it did not disappoint! I’ve been countless times since then. Really nice ambience—I recommend the higher floors for more privacy (but is less accessible given the stairs).
Tried the following:
- Thai iced tea: awesome to find a semi-affordable vegan version of Thai iced tea!
- Jeon (Korean savory pancakes) Combo: absolutely delicious and great to share, fun to share a mix of the flavors (sweet corn cilantro, scallion, and kimchi)
- Fried Manchurian Cauliflower: just okay, nothing special
- Porridge of the Day (Pumpkin and Black Sesame): My go-to porridge order is Pumpkin but I tried the Black Sesame which was very very mild (almost neutral palette cleanser) with a slight nutty flavor. The Pumpkin is also mild but more flavorful.
- Crispy Korean Chili Tofu: really delicious and the perfect amount of heat in the sauce and crisp texture of the tofu; my all-time FAVE dish
- Sizzling Mushroom: disappointing, had a congealed texture, not super flavorful (doesn’t compare to the version at HanGawi)
- Tofu Crumble Bibimbap: tasty
- Spicy Kimchi Bibimbap: very good if you like kimchi!
- Vegetarian “Duck”: good with a fake meat texture
- Lychee Hibiscus Spritz mocktail: Good
(Side note: I much prefer the bibimbap at HanGawi but the ones at Franchia are solid)

UPDATE: I reviewed Franchia the first time on HC exactly 20 years ago today. This review was posted very shortly after HappyCow invited people to post reviews. Before that time, I had visited Franchia on plenty of occasions, and since then I've continued to regularly visit Franchia with a wide variety of friends. In all, I've been to Franchia between 75-100 times altogether, and each time both my friends and I have enjoyed the food, the service, and the atmosphere. There is something surely to be said for consistency!

Although the atmosphere is simpler and the prices are a bit cheaper, the food here is of the highest quality: everything on the menu is good. I eat here regularly, and have brought many friends, too: everyone agrees that this is a great vegan restaurant. The location (near the Empire State Building) is also great.

I rarely give 5 stars but Franchia was so incredible. The service was great, staff was kind, and food was delicious. We ordered a variety of things like the Japchae, drunken basil noodles, rainbow toll, and tempura roll. We truly enjoyed everything and portions were large.

Just arrived in NYC. Checked Happy Cow and found this place a 7 min walk away from our hotel. Staff were awesome. Food was KILLING! Everything was outstanding. Exactly what we wanted and we finished it all!

While on a trip with friends, I was so intrigued by the idea of a fully vegan Korean restaurant that we had to stop in. Not only were we not disappointed but expectations were completely exceeded. For starters we ordered the stuffed mushrooms and peking "duck" bao. The mushroom stuffing was crispy and the sauce was both creamy and slightly sweet and tangy. The bao bun was soft and the "duck" had a hint of smoke and sweetness. For our meal, I got the Tteokbokki with veggies. It was spicy in the best way and the pillowy soft rice cakes were so satisfying. My friends had Bibimbop and a fresh bowl of veggies with crispy tempeh and ginger dressing (I can't remember the name of the dish). They were so happy with them. Dessert was to die for. I had the Dubai cheesecake which was, no exaggeration, probably the best dessert I've ever had. My friends had the Ube creme brulee and cherry vanilla ice cream with a ginger cookie. The Ube creme brulee was sweet and smooth with a satisfying toasted sugar top. The ice cream was perfectly creamy. We are absolutely coming back when we visit NYC next year!

I popped in for early dinner and was delighted by the atmosphere of this charming Korean vegan cafe. The space is lovely with multiple levels of seating creating an intimate but laid-back vibe. The iced Thai tea is delicious with very good balance of sweetness, the “Peking duck” bao were delicious with crispy “duck” and fresh cucumbers, and the dumpling combo was incredible. Highly recommend!

Amazing Korean food - Edit
Went here for some vegan Korean fare and wasn’t disappointed. We had the Japchae dumplings (steamed), jjajangmean and ttokboekki. Everything tasted real good. We even had the makgeolli which is a sweet fermented rice wine which was delicious. Loved everything!
