Good lunch special - Edit
Staff told me L21 would be vegan if they made an avocado roll instead of a California roll. The special’s miso soup option has animal products (as does their vegetable soup, although that’s not a special), but you can get water or soda in its place. The ribboned salad lettuce was fresh, peanut dressing well seasoned, avocado roll good. The lightly fried silken tofu pieces over rice were generously sized and the texture was so, so good — custardy but not at risk of falling apart even when I used the chopsticks to pinch the pieces in half.

This is a very small sushi eatery that offers a decent number of inexpensive vegan options, with quick service. This is a counter-serve place: you order at the counter for takeout, or you can simply grab a seat and wolf down your food after receiving it at the counter.
Read moreWhen I entered, I was a bit queasy when I saw the sushi-chef handling fish, since I feared cross contamination and ending up with fish-tasting sushi. So I asked if the sushi-maker could change gloves, wash his hands, wash the knife and table, etc. and I was very happy to see them accomodate me (and since I watched them the whole time, I saw that they did indeed so).
The vegan sushi is good, and you get good value for your money. There is nearby competition, however: one of the best vegan restaurants in NYC—Beyond Sushi—is located less than a 10-minute walk from Hanabi, and the food at Beyond Sushi naturally is much better. However, if you are in a rush or on a budget, this place is not bad.
Pros: Good value., Quick service.
Cons: Tiny, no bathroom, not for a long relaxed meal, The all vegan Beyond Sushi is nearby
