Finally!

This is our fourth visit to Japan and I’ve been wanting to go to this place since our first... well i was finally able to get my family to come with me 🥰🥳 (they are not vegan/vegetarian) and we all loved it!!! The menu was varied, and the food was fresh, well seasoned, and super tasty! Now i can’t wait to go back!

I might be delirious

I woke up at 4am eastern time to get a shuttle to my first airport in CLT. A three hour flight to Dallas, two hour layover, 13 hour flight to Narita, fifty minute train to Ueno, popping to Iriya to check into my hostel and deposit my bag later -- I went back to seek this place out in the JR Ueno station as my very first excursion in Japan. And dang it was good. I don't know how much of that was thirty hours of being awake, but the service was fast and kind, the ramen and soy meat super flavorful, and the atmosphere real nice. I only got sort of lost in the station. Thanks to the reviewer who pointed out it is near the ecute stores on the third floor nearish platform 8.

Pros: Literally everything

Cons: May be a little difficult to find, Have to pay JR entrance fee

Great taste, canteen-style place

Every dish I could taste here (and I have tried a lot!) was good. Maybe the one I enjoyed the least was the ma-po tofu, because of the soft consistency of the tofu, but perhaps it is just me (I am unaware whether non-vegan ma-po tofu is supposed to feel like this). The ramen are especially good and filling.

As for desserts, I would say maybe the special panda ice cream is a bit small (although good); on the other hand, the (possibly matcha if you want) eight rice cookies + drink are a good deal (for both taste and quantity). They go well with the small vanilla (?) soy (?) milk cup; and the mixed vegetable juice is fine too, so it is a safe bet. (If you like café au lait, I would say the milk cup is a bit too small to compensate for the coffee cup…)

It turns out that even their two Italian dishes are excellent, especially the spaghetti bolognese! Too bad they come only in sets (side order of a very nice soup cup and some vegetables); I would have liked being able to order some ramen + only standard spaghetti bolognese. (It seems somewhat perverted to go here for an almost all-Italian meal only, but hey, then again, it is on the menu.)

It is true that you have to be inside the station (careful: the JR one), and so either travel there or buy a 140 yen platform ticket; I consider this when talking about the price: it is still very reasonable.

The menu has both Japanese and English; the staff are very nice and can manage some English (although they are not necessarily fluent). (Not saying this wanting the whole world to convert to English or being judgemental, but this is interesting to know in case you want to say something very specific and cannot speak Japanese.)

This is the kind of place that has a canteen feel to it; although there seems to be often many customers, seats are quickly available. Service is swift.

Chopsticks are to be taken from drawers, but I think you can ask for a fork (I did not and managed to get by, despite being the clumsiest boy on the planet).

(As a coincidence, I feel exactly as linusminus’s review coming just before mine concerning ramen: black sesame first, with golden (= peanut butter) a close second. A matter of personal taste or a universal truth? You decide.)

Updated from previous review on 2019-11-16

Pros: Taste! At affordable price, Friendly staff, Detailed allergy-inducing ingredients (columns)

Cons: Some side dishes are somewhat small

Must-visit ramen shop

I've been to their Tokyo Station location several times prior to this review. My favorite tantan is probably their black sesame option, with golden sesame being close second. This time I decided to add mapo tofu as a side (available as a set) and it was simply amazing! I really can't recommend this restaurant enough. Both locations have very helpful staff and the quality of the food is always top notch.

Tasty noodles

Nice with a place with lots of options, everything from appetizers to dessert. The only thing is that it is inside of the station which cost money, but the food is cheap for what you get. Friendly staff and nice food!

I'm glad I came here!

Great restaurant! Just note it is actually in the Ueno station. You need to buy a ticket to get inside the station, but it is totally worth it!

Awesome!

We went here twice, 1 in each train station in Tokyo. The ramen was delicious and we got a soy sandwich to go which we ate the next day for lunch.

Pros: Lots of vegan options!

Best vegan ramen in Tokyo

Very delicious authentic ramen! I’ve had the black sesame ramen and asked for it not too spicy, it was perfect. A tiny bit too oily for me but would have it again for sure! Big portion especially compared to local portions. The gyozas are nice too. Staff is kind, they even brought me a cloth cover when they saw I am wearing a white top - ramen eating can get messy😄it’s a bit annoying that you have to get a train ticket (cheapest ¥140) to get into the train station. Wish they dedcuted from the bill, but anyway totally worth it.

Pros: Authentic delicious ramen, Good price

Cons: Hard to find, Have to pay a train ticket to get into t station

Great ramen

Great ramen, with alot of option, including soy meat dishes. Its located inside ueno station (if you dont going to use the train, it will cost you 140 yen to go inside the station, to get to the restaurant). Not so pricey, good flavor, if you dont love spicy, ask not to do spicy.

Worth the Struggle to Find

This is a must-visit every time I am in the Tokyo area. Try any of their sets which are reasonably priced, and don’t forget to grab some to-go items. Vege-katsu sandwich is 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Look for ecute near the Iriya entrance to find this place. It is nearby track 8!

Pros: All vegan, Quick and friendly service, Absolutely delicious

Cons: Difficult to find

Excellent customer service

A little hard to find but worth making the effort. The first place I came across in Tokyo where I didn’t leave hungry. The broth was a tad salty and the gyoza were a bit dry, but on the whole it was very fulfilling.

Pros: Friendly staff, Range of vegan food to choose from

Cons: Difficult to find, Pricey for ramen

Hard to find, but worth it

It is a bit tricky to find, hidden inside the Ueno Station. We tried a few of the offered dishes and everything was delicious. My son (4) loved the gyoza but found the ramen soup a bit too spicy. Not expensive, good portion size. Iced water offered free of charge.

Lots of choice!

I found it difficult to find vegan restaurants in Tokyo - this place was a relief! Contains a lots of seats (relatively to Tokyo), everything is vegan and you can choose from at least 3 Ramens, 3 "TanTan's" specials and also non-broth dishes.

The black sesame TanTan was kinda spicy, the white was really great in my opinion. You have additional spicyness and ginger in front of view to spicy your broth as you like.

They also have some takeout sandwiches and bowl. I took the sandwich and found it smaller than I thought (but good), next time I'll try the bowl.

Unfortunately, you cannot enter this place without being on the station - meaning having paid a ticket to take the transport. I'll suggest optimizing your visits on this and to not try to find an alternative entrance like I did! It's on the "ecute shop", 3rd floor, near the Platform 8. Good luck!

Pros: Lots of dishes, Not expensive

Cons: You have to go inside the station with a ticket

Very good tantan!

We had the tantans from the menu and they were very tasty. At T‘s Tantan you will find a good meal for a fair price. We can also highly recommend the vegan gyoza as a side dish.

Please be aware, that you can go directly upstairs from the train plattforms to the restaurant, so you don’t have do leave the station. Otherwise it will be a long detour.

Pros: Completely vegan menu, Friendly staff, Great taste

worth the hype

soooo delicious!! small place that may have a bit of a wait, but so worth it- is inside ueno station so it’s a good quick stop in transit to other places, will have to buy a ticket/use IC card to get into the station otherwise. i recommend the soy meat — soooo good.

Pros: lots of delicious options, clearly labelled allergens , cute decor/interior

Cons: can have a bit of a wait
